replacing the windscreen

Post by turtle3 »

Hi all, I have a couple of jobs left to do on my 87 mk 1 before I try for the m.o.t., unfortunately one of them will be to replace the cracked windscreen, its not insured so im gonna have to cough up for it myself (although I was thinking of changing the plates to that of my 86 mk1 that is insured but the cars got the registration etched into all the other windows B*&ger). I have replaced an escort screen before but after watching a pro struggle on a bonded mk1 screen Ive decided its a no go to do it myself. I need this done cheap, so my question is would a company come and fit a second hand screen if I managed to get one and get it out of the donor car and clean it up, or would they tell me to go whistle !! I think a new fitted one will be in excess of £180( more than 2 months beer money #-o ) any suggestions appreciated, thanks

Your only option as i see it is to call a few of these companies and ask them if they'll fit a second hand windscreen.

I don't see why they wouldn't tbh.

I thought because the screens are bonded then you can't remove them? well without damaging them :?

Hi

Whereabouts are you??

Ive got a mate in Norhtampton who has his own windscreen business and he can do just about anything, even removing bonded screens and reinstalling them - he does it for bodyshops who are respraying or adding bodykits to cars.

Basically you need the right tools to do it and theyre pretty pricey, but it can be done if you know how!

Let me know if youre in the Northampton area and Ill see if he can get you a price.
