R plate info please (applies to N.Ireland drivers only)

Post by skytek »

Just wondering if any of the other N.I people would know much about this.

As a new driver I'm driving under R plates which absolutely sucks because I'm not supposed to go over 45mph until the year is up!

However, this friday I NEED to take the motorway and rather than sit at 45 would really need to be doing 60-70 to get to my destination on time.

I was wondering if I took the r plates off for that journey and did get stopped (I know the chances are very minimal) would I get in alot of bother (in which case I wouldn't do it) or would I just get a telling off?

I know it would be unlikely I'd get stopped but I don't like to take risks and definately don't want any penalty points on my license!

Thanks for the help.

You'd get done for not displaying your R plates. Though i'm not even sure if R drivers are allowed on the motorway. Either way i'd just take them off and not go above 70mph

R plate drivers are permitted to go on the motorway but in my opinion you would be more likely to cause a accident at 45mph on a motorway than you would at 70mph.So take them down and as Joey said dont go above 70mph.

r plates

Thanks guys, I can't wait to be able to burn the r plates!

If I ever got caught out taking them down on the odd motorway journey do you have any idea how harsh they could be as far as points/fines etc.?

I'm guessing that if my speed limit is 45, then doing 70 on a motorway would mean they could do me for going 25mph over the limit! uh oh!

well without sounding too harsh because you are still in your first year of driving technically you could be banned.3 points for not displaying and 3 for speeding but lets hope it never comes to that,it would take a very harsh officer

r plates

I'm thinking being in a black mr2 with r plates they cops aren't going to be too friendly to begin with, and will probably have a deep inner desire to dish out the maximum they can [-X ! Best play it safe and keep the motorway journeys to a minimum! I still think the 45 rule is one of the most stupid traffic laws there is.

Thanks for the tips guys!
