[Mk2] [NA] My car is all wet...

Post by craigt1097 »

I just had to rescue my car as the river next to the office broke it banks... It's all wet inside and ripped my number plate off. Close escape really...

Cheers guys. She is ok. Still running fine. If anyone has any tips on how to dry the carpets out let me know though, the hair dryer is just not cutting it... :?

Glad your car is ok. Carpets are difficult to dry if soaked because of the backing but if you can hang or stand them somewhere reasonably warm and airy they will eventually - biggest problem is that they tend to go musty or mildewed if it takes a while - you can prevent this by cleaning them before trying to dry with a solution of distilled white vinegar (about 1/3 vingar to 2/3 water) and water. Just sponge it on, blot off with an old towel then use a stiffish brush to raise the pile, let them dry and vacuum. Should look better than before. Good way to clean car carpets generally - gets ground in dirt, salt stains etc out. You can use up to 50/50 mix if stains are bad.

I had a very wet Honda before I got my 2. If you try and get hold of a good carpet cleaner (Kartcher ones are the best I've had) and use it on everything wet but without the solution on (so it just sucks up the water). It'll take out a monster amount out. If you can get the car in a garage or off-street on a private drive, try and get hold of a small dehumidifier (got one from BnQ for £99) and leave it in the car on turbo setting and that'll draw allot out as well -should completely dry it so long as you keep the windows shut or near shut (best putting an RCD on the plug though just in case). I'd then go back in with the carpet cleaner but use the solution and suck now to get any damp smell out of it, put the dehumidifier on again to make sure you get it all out. Takes a while but if you don't shampoo everything at some stage you might get a musty smell at some stage.

You can hire stuff from dry cleaners, DIY stores or hire tool places if you don't want to buy. You might not need the dehumidifier if it's not too wet.

Hope this helps,

Richard
