[Mk2] [NA] Which induction kit?

Post by d4v3 »

Just wondered if i could get some advice as to which induction kit is best for the MR2 n/a. i'm after performance rather than noise and my budget is £100.
i could make my own with a piper x filter and piping. if so, would it be advisable to modify the intake box as i get the impression that it directs quite a lot of air.

Your not going to notice any difference in performance on an NA. You may aswell save your money if all you wanted it for was that. Most people change them for the sound.

As Rory says....not much gains on an NA atall. Fitted mine and no difference whatsoever TBH apart from a intense sucking sound and roar from the engine bay at 6500RPM
Stick with Stock if you want maximum performance from your filter on an N/A. Wack a decent panel filter in there and jobs sorted. But saying that the noise from a cone filter is tempting and enjoyable!
For £100 and seeing as its an N/A id go for a K&N filter as they are a well known reputable make. :thumleft:

As the others have said you'll se no performance difference. I've got a pipercross on mine for sound.. good I think for £90. There are differences between fitments between revs so check you get the right one if you go for it.

well thanks for the replies. i'm gonna have a go at building a ram air stylee induction kit. the plan is to run the piping from the intake manifold down to the air vent on the rear arch, whack on the piper x filter i got from ebay and make a plastic / metal surround of some kind so that all the air coming from the vent is directed to the filter.
it sounds a bit ambitious, but worse case scenario is that theres no performance gain, it just sounds good. and for less than the price of a Air Impulse induction kit, i cant go wrong. hopefully :clown:

i'll let you all know if it works

I got an extra 30 miles out of a tank of fuel after fitting a power enterprise induction kit compared to the stock air box set-up. I'd argue that there was a very slight (only just noticeable though) improvement on acceleration also (but like I say not really anything to measure)...... No improvement?

....the induction kit is redundant now with my new engine so PM me if you'd like it.

I couldn't care less really about how it will sound, and if i was bhp mad i'd have gone for a tubby. But i'll probably put an Apexi or something on soon because the sheer amount of stock box that is there MUST be very restrictive. There is an enormous amount of excess plastic box(es) there.

I'd recommend fitting one personally but I'd fit a twin cone cotton one rather than a foam one. Take all the boxes out and put a heat shield round the filter. Only thing is you'll get a whistle from the head at low revs as all those knobbly restrictive parts to the OEM induction system seem to serve as noise deadening.

Takes about an hour to change out. If you can't get an Apexi (I couldn't get hold of one initially) then the Power Enterprise ones look exactly the same apart from the colour from what I've seen.

Some folk claim a difference, some folk say there's nothing. It was worthwhile for me for the saving in fuel at least and I did feel a difference -particularly when I added the sports exhaust as well.

I still can't decide whether to go for a performance panel filter in the stock airbox or an Apexi induction kit. I'm not fussed about creating or deadening noise so i'm just considering what is more efficient.

Efficiency wise, the cone filter has to be more efficient if properly fitted.

Meaning: cold air intake (using a box) and as straight as possible piping to the intake (without sharp edges and such)...

As mentioned before, the standard system also has the objective of sound deafening which means less efficiency... In the end, the result will probably be neglectable but in theory...

I would go for the cone just for the sound! :)
