toyota only as far as i know, ive tried to get them elsewhere myself and failed.Personally i dont see how a mk1 oil cooler can work given that the coolant flowing through it is hot, probably hotter than the oil its supposed to be cooling.Ive bypassed the oil cooler on a few mk1's that ive fitted corolla engines to with zero side effects, its one of those toyota extravagances thats not really needed in my opinion. So if you have one good oil cooler pipe and you need to stop a leak you can link it from the top hose to the bottom and bypass the cooler.
Re: oil cooler pipes for mk 1
They don't get that hot Richie, I reckon coolant hose would hack it, but don't go and do it on my say so
If your really stuck something like a piece of Samco silicone hose would be well up to the job. It can handle 250c in temperture and gotta be able to cope with a couple of bar pressure.
There is no real pressure in the oil cooler hoses anway, as it just returns to the sump doesn't it?
Over to you with that one Paul.
Just to add mine leak a bit, but to be honest I reckon thats a good thing.
I don't use a pint between oil changes, so it doesn't hurt cost wise, and at tleast it keeps the sump a bit oily, and if your not carefull a mk1 sump can rust through. Its good prevention for that I reckon

they can only be sourced from Toyota at £30 each hose !!!! GULP !, their both identicle although carry different part numbers, i bought mine last year as my last ones were rotted through and leaked quite badly, if i were to pass on one word of warning, it would be not to tighten up the jubilee type clips too tight, they bite into the rubber and then oil escapes past this with awful results, i had this happen to me so i sliced a bit off the end, lesson well learned , Jinxy

The SCs or any JDM MK1s don't have them. Like you say they are not really needed.
Having said that equalising the oil to water temperature is generally a good idea. When driving hard the cooler will keep the oil temps down. The stock cooler is far better than an oil/air one and is a neat bit of kit IMO.
I really think Toyota reckons that in the UK the cars were going to be driven hard given that they fitted an oil cooler and rear ARBs of which the latter didn't appear on JDM cars till 88.

hack a bit off and see it will only take a few minutes.from what i remember mine are only "push on " tight and they dont leak.but then my cars valued at more than seven hundred quid! he he.
happy new year to you all and jinxy its it to SHOUT at that insurance company.it must be a month now with no decent offer.

Happy new year to you too Kev, and i am going to SHOUT !! at the insurance company come wednesday morning i can tell you, apparently the woman who deals with my claim and makes all the important descisions has been away on holiday............................lets hope it wasnt to Sri-lanka !! .
Yes you can tighten Jubilee clips too tight, due to the rubber being softer on the pipes when oil is involved the clips eventually cut right throught the rubber and thats when you can lose a sump full of oil and know nothing about it until its too late, so the moral of the story is, only do them up tight enough to turn the pipe around on the tube and not pull it off and not too tight that it cuts the rubber clean through...... hope that makes sense...... it is the morning after the night before after all !!!! , Jinxy

Hoses
If you're going to use a non-standard hose for oil, be careful what the hose is made of, not all rubbers especially synthetic ones are resistant to oil, some break down completely over time! Coolant hoses may be able to stand the temperature and the pressure by the oil might kill them!
You'll probably find that's why the Mr T hoses are so expensive (that and the 1000% profit they will be making on parts.... )

Re: oil cooler pipes for mk 1
I replaced my oil cooler pipes 2 years ago with some universal oil hose from a local motor factors then 1 year later one of them burst when I was on my way to a wedding. I then got some oil hose from a local hose specialist, it is used for the hydraulic steering pipes on boats apparently and is capable of holding full pressure whilst on fire. You only need about 1 meter and 4 jubilee clips, so it's not too expensive. Have a look in the yellow pages and see if there are any hose specialists near to you who can help.
Hope this helps.
