MR2 ANY GOOD FOR DRIFTING?!

Post by COMPTON-JAY »

hi after seeing some nutters in japan drifting on the streets! i'd like to get into it, most ppl was using nissan s13's most o the cars were front engine n rear wheel drive, with the mr2 being mid engine would this make it crap for drifting or keep spinning out?!

They're not the easiest car to use. Probalem is with a 2 is that when it goes, its gone. Its not coming back.

In a s13,14 or 15, or even GTST, you can swing it about until your hearts content.

most people would say you cant drift an mr2, Playbunny and drift king Keiichi Tsuchiya would say otherwise, not impossible just more difficult than other cars because of the weight distribution. Reason for s13/s14's being so popular is easily tuneable turbo engine, front engine/rear wheel drive layout and relatively light weight (no more than an mr2 turbo beleive it or not) giving nigh on 50/50 weight distribution which makes it so chuckable.
If you are after getting in to drifting you really need to see the Drift Bible, available at Halfrauds, a drifting 'how to'

Theres a section in the Drift Bible about drifting the 2 - although the driver takes a section too fast and spins it! Its possible, just a lot more difficult than a Silvia, 200sx etc etc.

Hello Jay.

As you already seem to have noticed most of the cars that are chosen for drifting are indeed of the front engined rear wheel drive variatey :cyclops: i once spoke with Nana of option motorsport regarding the MR2 and it's abilities in the drift department. He was telling me that their are infact a good few that attend the drift days in Mr2's and that he himself had once had to give a drifting demonstration in this very car. He explained that it did take him a few minutes to get the hang of the 2's characteristics but from there he found it to be a fn car to drift if not very challenging at times! But all that said we are talking about one of the best drifters in the country.

So to sum up.....the MR2 whilst not being a particulary well suited car for drifting, is still fun to use for the sport. Ok, so you wont be winning any drift comps in the humble 2 but you will have a lot of fun trying :D

You can, but its not really a drifting car. Its harder to drift than a FR car for sure.

It can be done though, it just takes a bit more skill.

My old SC was quite good for drifting as it had a pretty tight LSD.

You'll never be able to hang the back out as far as a FR car, but you certainly will have a lot more skill if you can master drifting a 2.

I was well impressed when Peter Carrick drifted the whole of the first corner at donnington when I was passenger lol!
Small turbos - they're not big and they're not clever!

Just say NO to small turbos!

to me the whole point of drifting is its meant to be fun. in an mr2...yes sure you can drift it but it isnt fun because theres so little margin for error and youll never pull off sustained slides with ease and consistency like an FR car..and trust me its far more fun in an FR.

I'd disagree its still a lot of fun.

Obviously its not like a caterham in how far you can hang the tail out, but it can be done.

I'd just say if you're gonna try it...... do it somewhere you can't hit anything, a disused airfield or something. It's gonna take a LOT of practice and something/someone could easily get hurt. Not to mention the huuuuge repair bills! [-X

Well of course, i've never drifted on the public road.. But, trackdays or airfield days are of course the place to do this kind of thing.

Ole pete couldn't keep the darn wonkey donkey in a straight line !!!

Opened my eyes at donny to see the car is still controllable at a 70 mph drift ( in a fashion !! ) well the back wheels might have being 70mph !!

Drift king pete managed to correct two snaps in a straight line at 90 mph in front of me - lol !! looked totally comical as it was too wet for the car to get grip and flip ( no edges on the track ! ) - he must have looked like a hamster on that wheel !! :clown:
