Mk 2 MR2

Post by Dandylyon83 »

Hi guys,
Am thinking of getting an mk2 mr2, but i've heard loads of problems with them, especially the turbos. Money won't stretch to a turbo, but was looking at a standard 2.0 litre or a t-bar. Wondering if you guys have had loads of problems with them. been told that the roof's leak on t-bar models but this is easily fixed by silicone i'm told. Only 21 but i'm hoping to save some pennies up and get me a cool mr2, much more impressive than chaving a little nova and revving the boobs off it i'm sure you'll agree. Main concerns are reliability really. I wanna be out having fun not sat in a garage paying bills! Any help would be really appreciated.
Cheers guys.

toyotas in general are bullet proof. the 3s series engines that are in the '2 and the celice are are fine example.

With a few exceptions, only highly modded ones will give u probs.

If u get a uk version, ins should be cheaper. do a search for ins using the icon at the top and phone some companies.

Its all worth it. im 22 and about to buy my 4th. 1st came at 19, ist turbo came at 20

Go for it! cant believe you've even mentioned that 'n' word here!! my 2 MR2's have been totally reliable, both NA's, 1 mk1 and 1 mk2, my mk2 has cost me a fair bit this year though... Obviously t-bars could leak - so just get a tin top then. That said my last MR2 was a t-bar and i do miss it on my current tin top. My advice (for what its worth) is to try and get a uk t-bar, as you're under 25 the insurance is going to be quite nasty for an import. Dont forget to look at mk1's though - mine was loads and loads of fun!

As the guys have said above, the engines seem to be bullet proof.

I've had my 2 for 2 yrs now and the only mechanical problem i have had with it was a stone through my radiator due to them being exposed, but that wasn't expensive to get a re-conned 1.

Mines a t-bar and it started to leak this winter, but it only did it with heavy rain, as soon as a put some silicone grease on the seals it was fine.

As for insurance, i got mine when i was 22, and the insurance was a bit steep for a turbo then, so got a gti, and to this day i am not sorry i did...
but i haven't driven a turbo yet! my mind might change when i do :)

dont no who told you theres loads of problems with them, someone who hasnt owned one i bet.
if treated right, these cars go onto 120-150k miles, what other sports cars can handle this.
lots of peeps on here are roughly on 60-100k miles, and generally have no problems at all.
all cars have there difects, but as already stated, the toyota mr2 is a solid car!
get one with full history and youll be laughing.
welcome by the way!

Engine, gearbox and electrics are solid on these cars. Bodywork is pretty good too. I've had my G-Ltd for 5 years and only had to change the consumables (Plugs, leads, oil, filter etc), a snapped driveshaft, a handbrake cable and steering rack joint. Considering the car is 14 years old, has about 105k miles on the clock and has been on a couple of trackdays, that's not bad at all !

Don't get me wrong, there might be problems that you come across, but Toyotas are generally known to be bullet proof.

I got my car on my 21st bday. No major probs really, I have had to change the springs cos the other fella cut them rather then using proper lowering springs. No leaks at all with the T Bar unless it rains heavy and I get a small drip on the drivers side, nothing major!

Engine is totally sound.

Mine's a UK 1991 T Bar, £960 TPFT.... I have 0 NCB as I've always been a named driver before now! Thought that was pretty fair!

Lovely cars! Can't get enough, just be careful! I span mine! 8-[

Any questions pm me.

It probably seems like that, but remember many people on here are (a) obsessed by cars and thus love to listen to every noise their baby makes (c) like do do most routine servicing jobs and (c) like modifying or tweeking their cars. Plus most owners are driving around in 12+ year olds.

For age and performance (as standard) i think you would be hard pushed to find other makes of car that are better.

Go for it mate!

The dream

Cheers guys, much appreciated the feedback. Got a couple of mates who have imported turbos. They've had a few problems, one resulting in the top end going, got that sorted at huge cost, only to find the bottom end went. It now lies on his driveway in mr2 heaven! a tribute to all things mentally fast. He did rag it tho. Pulled away rear wheels spinning and the back end stepping out. Mint!! Checked out insurance, 950 for standard 2.0 or 1050 for t-bar! Hmm, t-bar it is then hopefully in white, so long as they don't rape me when i tell them i'm still at uni! Seen loads with leather interiors, is that standard on t-bars or not? Always loved the jap street race scene, what a better way than start it with an mr2! live the dream!
Cheers again guys.
