MK2 MR2 Model question

Post by Dave Cook »

Hi all.. i want to buy a MK2 MR2.. SW20.? .. but dont seem to be able to find a reliable source on model identification .. or differences for the UK market.

Does anyone know where different models are shown or described.?

Not too sure what GT .. GT-s etc mean in model terms.. but the one i'm looking for is a solid top with no sunroof or T-bar.

I also heard that early models 1989 to 1991 were lower power than the norm and were discontinued .. how do i tell the difference.. as i want a full power model.. (but non turbo)

Was air-con standard.. or an extra

I dare say there'll be loads more questions..!!!

Cheers.. Dave

With regard to non-turbo MR2's:

Hardtops/Tbars are the G-ltds

GT have sunroof/Tbar and the GTS were turbos.

The one you're after is a hardtop G-ltd which is a Jap import. 1989-1993 these had 158 bhp although had more torque than the later rev 3 G-ltd which had 173 bhp

HTH

Dont panic, you do infact have a UK car :D The above is incorrect.

The JDM called their N/A MR2 the G-LTD, the UK market called theirs the GT-i16v

It's also wrong in the fact that the gt was a turbo too and not only the gt-s, plus they both came in tin top or t-bar. the differences between gt and gt-s was the trim level (abs, air-con, steering fogs etc.) Same with the n/a, the one with the toys was the g limited and the one without was the g.

Come on Craig, get it right. #-o :D

LOL.. so you can understand why i'm confused .. if everyone else is too.!!

Perhaps you'll run it by me once again to make doubly sure before i go and look or buy something i shouldnt.......

A mk2 MR2 with a hardtop is called what UK model.?

How do i tell the difference between the different power outputs of early UK model cars.?

Can i get air-con in a hard top UK model car

Cheers again.. Dave

Highly unlikely that you could find a UK hard top with aircon. It was an option, but at something along the lines of £2k+ very little people took this option up. Best bet as said is a G Limited import if you really want the toys!

This is getting way confusing now #-o

Right, firstly Jap NAs:
G (base spec) & G-Limited - available as a hard top or T-Bar, rev1 & 2 158bhp, rev3 & 4 173bhp, rev5 200bhp.

Jap Turbos:
GT & GT-S - available as a hard top or T-Bar, rev1 & 2 225bhp, rev3+ 245bhp.

UK NAs:
GT is the sunroof model, GT T-Bar is the T-Bar model, rev1 158bhp, rev2 154bhp, rev3 173bhp, rev4 & 5 168bhp.
And then there's the UK 'coupe' which was only available as a sunroofed rev1 & had around 120bhp.

I think the confusing being that a GT is be a turbo if it's a Jap car, but an NA if it's a UK car.

Now I've probably just added to the confusion

BTW: there is no such things as a UK hardtop. and UK cars never got climate control, and aircon is VERY rare on UK cars.

quoted from above post (dont no how to use the quote thing, too confused)

UK NAs:
GT is the sunroof model,

BTW: there is no such things as a UK hardtop #-o

Now this is getting way confusing unless theres a difference between a hardtop and a sunroof model. Apologies if its my mistake :D

Hardtop/Tintop is a completely solid roof (no sunroof or t-bar) :)

...which equals greater body strength, a lighter car, no scuttle squeaks/creaks, or leaks. :D
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!
