Smell of fuel inside the cabin

Post by Vindezal »

On the Knowledge Base part on here, I cant find, theres a section on the smell of fuel inside your car. this is due to a pipe which is some sort of ventalation pipe from the fuel pipe or other...

It says in knowledge base, to just disconnect this... then what would be the point in having it in the first place. On the other hand my fuel cap is getting old.. #-o

Mk1 owners that have the same problem have bunged the air breather pipe to eliminate this. I always thought that if this is doen then where does the air go. Should be able to pick one up easy enough...2nd hand perhaps......reasonably easy to get to on a Mk1...not sure of the 2. :?

there's a non-return valve you can replace on the MK1 its £26 according to Paul.

Guess it would be similar on the MK2

I wouldn't bung the breather hose... It does serve a purpose. On a MKI the breather hose is normally connected to the chassis rail. If the breather valve begins to fail or a rubber "grommet" is removed (or perishes) elsewhere on the chassis rail, the cabin fills with the petrol fumes.

I am assuming the MKII's are designed in a similar way, by what is being described.

Follow this link to see the problem discussed on the issue with MKI's:
