Rear Tie-Rods!!

Post by un1eash »

Well my car developed a knocking from the rear over the holidays. And after checking everything its the inner bush on the tie-rods. My local motor factor said he could get them so took one off and took it them only to find they cant get the parts.

So how much is Mr T gonna charge me for complete rear tie-rod arms or is there anywhere else cheaper that i can get them from. Ive seen some on twosrus at £125 which are abit to pricey.

Cheers Chris

Hi Chris, they are bearings not bushes apparently thats why aftermarket bush kits do not include these as part of the package. My advice would be to buy a good set of secondhand ones, they dont often cause that many problems, in fact yours is the first ive heard of. Whats the problem with them ? have they worn oval, or are they just soft ? im sure you will find a good set soon, just look on ebay, there's plenty of parts cars on there at the moment, cheers, Jinxy

Whats happening, is when i turn/twist the tie-rod you can hear the inner end knocking on itself, the inner sleeve of the bearing/bush is hitting the outside. All the other bushes and ball joints are new, and drop links are fine so i cant see what else it could be.

Below shows a picture of the movement which i believe to be causing the knocking.....

The ball joints were quite loose so could do with being changed aswell.

Tom had a bit of trouble with some recently too

Seems Twos R Us do a replacement, at £125 per pair

Mr T will be able to provide you with the inner part of the tie rod complete with a new bush. Tom did get a price but I can't rememeber it off hand (£30-40 seems to be the figure lurking in the back of my mind though). On top of that I'd recommend a new tube at about £10 or so as it's less hassle to cut the old one off than trying to dismantle everything properly.

Here you go Chris: :D

Clamp for tube: 45466-22010
Fixings for clamp: 90101-08265 (Bolt) 90170-08125 (Nut)
94511-00800 (Washer)
(NOTE: This is a correction to my previous list of mk1b parts where I missed the washer and quoted it's part number for the bolt, also don't forget that for one tie rod you will need 2 clamps, 2 bolts, 2 nuts and 4 washers.)

mk1a specific parts are as follows:
Outboard tie rod end: 45046-19155
Inboard tie rod end: 48709-17010

mk1b parts are:
Outboard tie rod end: 45046-19185
Inboard tie rod end: 48709-17020

Then we come to the large bolt which attaches the inboard end. The EPC lists 3 part numbers for this depending on age but I can't say whether or not these refer to 3 different bolt specifications or whether they just have 3 numbers for the same part (which happens from time to time).

And here's the prices (click to get readable resolution):

Ouch, i think at those prices i'll get a set from twosrus. Thort about just replacing the ball joints, how much movement is there spose to be at the bush end? I can move mine freely back and forth.

Eh? :? It's not a bush, it's a spherical bearing..... :-k

It should move freely but there shouldn't be any play in it.

I'm confused..... :?

Yes sorry i know its a bearing with rubber round. Must just be the ball joints that are knackered then as theres no free play.

I'm pretty sure this is the cause of my knocking, nothing else seems loose or free and when i twist the rod the bearing knocks at its exstreams, might have to re-check everything.

Chris, IF your tie bars are correctly aligned, it will never reach it's extremes. What you need to check is that both ends are aligned to each other (do you know what I mean?)

Here you go Chris :D

If you can't twist the bar 10 degrees or more, the ends are misaligned (impossible to make this mistake on the Mk1a)

Mine can do this, this is where the knock i'm on about comes from. It must be something else then causing the knocking then.
