Another "what's it worth?" question, rev2 turbo

Post by dex »

J plate rev 2 turbo, 66k, recaros, LSD, 17" OZ alloys, lowered, recent bigger turbo, 2 new front Bilsteins three months ago, bodywork overall in good condition except for smallish dent on C pillar, engine shagged - down on compression on 1 cylinder and started to use oil when this cylinder went (rings I think).

Is it better to sell whole or break it?

how bad is it that you can get the problem fixed and keep it?
if not then i'll guess around the grand mark?

The car still gets used daily but planting the fast pedal is avoided as this tends to use more oil. The engine problem appeared after a really quick blast, overboost protection kicked in, overboost code got thrown up and the compression got checked and was found to be down one one cylinder.

I'm hoping that the overboost only knocked the moly off the rings and all thats needed is new rings. Worst case would be light hone or bore and a new piston.

probably a cracked piston or ringland then. continued running of the engine will only damage the bores. i'd get it fixed and sell it as a running car. then your looking at more like £3500

I've had a look down the bores with an endoscope, no big scratches or damage to the piston top, hence my hope it's only the rings.

People will only give you what they think it is worth at the end of the day.

Best thing to do is advertise it, have a few come round and see it and take it from there, because so many buyers can be different. Some may try and get your car for peanuts and some may be more realistic. :-k

The problem being with such a car it always seems that if anything is not running right the person (buyer) who may not be that knowledgable with MR2s will instantly think it will cost the earth to put right and try and knock you right down. [-X

Find out the cost for the repairs and stick to a budget you feel is correct. [-(
