Recon Engine gone! Boo hoo

Post by excalibur1814 »

:( The Bad:
My recon engine has gone ticky ticky and I'm not going to get it fixed. I don't even want anyone to look at the thing. I waited one year for this recon to finish and now, four months on, the engine simply dies with a rattle. (Woud give more details but there is no point because........)

 The Good:
At the end of this month Fensport or jbmotorsport (If they answer email that is) will get my order. I am thinking of the turbo transplant but I think the garage next door would have a heart attack. I should have gone this way from the start. Anyhow, questions!!! (Hope you do not mind)

1 What is the top speed of an SC AE101 engine? Is it limited?
2 Know anyone who has a nice engine cover or it's the old cut a square job.
3 Should I 'reeeaalllyy' get the pulley? I don't want to kill myself and the garage next door, as above, might charge me something silly like three hours to re-mark the thing.
4 £500 to fit the engine. Sound silly?

Thanks all!
I simply want it all to work.

maximum speed is dependant on whether you have the SC gearbox or not.

Why are you interested in maximum speed?

on an Na box i've seen 145mph @7800rpm on a levin AE92 engine which is pretty much the same as the AE101 engine (ie its more similar than the AW11 SC engine).

Speed isn't limited, not on a conversion.

Get the big pulley as whats the point of not getting it?

Intercooling is marginal with the big pulley though. Not a mega problem on the road, but definately a problem on track.

also you must have a power boost valve (ie rising rate fuel press regulator) and get it setup on a rolling road as otherwise it'll run lean on acceleration due to the NA pump and the lower pressure of the SC pressure regulator. You will see just over 180bhp, not 190bhp with the big pulley and an exhaust and filter.

Reckon on a grand to fit the engine. Its not difficult but if i was doing it i'd look at £750ish as its a few days work. Also depending on how complete the loom is on the SC engine there may be extra work involved. It cost me 1K to have my engine fitted back in 2001.

You'll have to cut a hole in your engine lid unless you can get both an SC engine lid and matching intercooler. Teh intercooler you get for the conversion is slightly smaller than the original SC one.

Thanks for the reply Lauren!

Only wanted to know the max speed as I saw an SC the other day that had some kind of mod that removed a limiter. Made me wonder what it was all about.

Yay to the pulley then and thanks for the money figure. May have to wait one more month then.

no worries,

If you want to hear total costs then 3-3.5K all fitted depending on whether you need to get a mangex exhaust or not.

8) Already got a Janspeed stainless steel jobby on my car! Woohoo!

Still quite a lot of money considering that a Mk2 Turbo can be found for something near that cost. Will have to think about this one.....

I guess it depends on whether you are a straightline junkie or not. ;)

Naaaa.... I prefer a few corners and turns. Remember a friend saying that he has never been in a car that goes round a roundabout and off again like the Mk1 does.

My step father and a few others have said, wisely, that because I have brand new suspension and a Janspeed stainless that I should really stick to it. It's a shame that there are not that many upgrades for the SC as the Turbo. (Or is there? ) Hell if I'm to keep the car for years then I wanna know if you can get a fancy Supercharger with lots of boost!! As for a turbo... I have always missed the tssss of a gear change and valve dump.

Another week and a bit to go.

In all honesty 180ish bhp makes a nicely balanced MK1. As you know i used to do a lot of trackdays in mine and i was going to put a turbo on it at one point, but after doing some more trackdays in it, i reckoned it had plenty enough power for what i wanted it for.

With a big pulley on it and especially after i'd lightened it and stripped it out, it was IMO too fast for me on the public road. Ie it would have been a matter of time before i lost my licence which is one of the reasons why i went back to an NA as it helps me behave myself. ;)
