starter relay failure/thieving alarm fitters

Post by nbear69 »

I've just had a laserline alarm put in to satisfy the insurance companies. Ever since i got it back had starting trouble. Turn key, dash lights up, engine doesn't crank. Fourth time i've taken it back and the guy reckons my starter relay has just gone, coincidentally at exactly the same time as they had it in to install the alarm! He says it's dur to watyer damage apparently a comon problem with MR2's according to him.

Does this sound plausible, or has he just blown my starte relay and is getting me to pay for a new one?

Nope. I've never heard of a starter relay ever going on any 2. On the MK2 (which one have you got) its actually in the boot with the ECU so it should never even get damp.

To be fair the Mk2 is a bit of a mare to fit an alarm to - but this guy doesn't sound like he's got the necessary experience by a long way.

I'd give him one more chance - but take it to someone who knows what they're doing when they fit alarms - I can reccommend someone if you're near Ipswich in Suffolk.

Are you sure it's not a case of having to press the 'disarm' button on the fob again if you've left it several seconds between gettting in and trying to fire her up? My Toad alarm does this now, and the Clifford in a previous tubby did the same.

Not meaning to patronise or anything, guv, but I've come across this thing before.
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

No because it's the original Toyota immobiliser that's messing it up. The one they've fitted is a fuel cut immobiliser, and it's the old electrical one that's messing up.
