Club Mag ?

Post by Tony jinxy froude »

This is not another " Bash the club mag editor" thread again, but did anyone think that it lacked pictures this time around ?, look at all the car shows that have been organised this summer attended by many area groups of the Mk1 club, plus all the pics taken at JAE, yet not one photo    . Just my observation, but i must admit to feeling a bit disapointed. Jinxy

the club mag content is weak because it lacks any punchy editorial comment and analysis.

but there is enough good raw material on this forum to provide the basis for this.

IMO you need someone with journalistic ability to harvest the best bits from the forum to pep it up--it is DULL!

you only need to look at other car club mags to see this.

now these comments are NOT intended to denigrate the people who currently work hard to produce the mag--i'm sure they do their best.

solution?--PAY a professional ---but difficult if funds are limited!

John are you suggesting yourself? the club AGM is coming up soon, you should have got a form to express your intention to go with the mag, why not come along an make the point ? the more discussion the better in my view.
We need constructive discussion with solutions and suggestions, not a slanging match and a christmas list of wants.not you personally but i am afraid it may turn into a grude, sulking, bickering affair. i do hope not. people need to think their ideas through prior to the meeting so that some progress can be made.

I spoke to Stuart Kynoch about the mag last weekend, club thoughts are that a new printer is needed and an increase in budget enabling better/more pictures to be used
as ever content is dictated by members input
get typing

I have spoken to Stuart and other commitee members about this at length.

We agree print quality needs to improve.

Also one of the things that became a PITA, is the change to how much Royal Mail charge for for postage. The magazine can't have much more than 46 (or may be 48) pages of content in order for it to go out at the "old" costs. Just by adding one or two pages, the cost of postage nearly doubles. One of the reasons the clothing brochure (sp?) didn't go out.

Richard does the best he can with the articles submitted. In the past members complained that their articles were being heavily edited, which is why most tend to go to print un-edited. If members submitting articles are not submitting photos, there's not a whole lot Richard can do...

I think people would be surprised how much time and effort is needed to just get all the articles together and then into some sort of format so they can be included in the amount of page space. Richard had an extrememly difficult & tight deadline on the magazine as he had not received many articles by the deadline even after numerous reminder to those who promised or expected to contribute. IIRC, he only had one event report and a couple of articles by the original deadline.

The AGM will hopefully bring more light to this topic as well as many others.

Perhaps for the AGM members can give some suggestions on how they would like things improved?

We are constantly seeing a bombardment of how crap they feel things may be, but seldom get practical solutions offered. The AGM will be an ideal opportunity to do this 8)

SYSTEM-G
whether you find my remarks amusing is of course up to you but i can do without being patronised .
i didn't mention richard hammond and of course i wish him a full recovery but had you not noticed that the forces of political correctness (which you appear to be part of) are wanting to take Top Gear off the air regardless of what happens to RH.
my reference was solely to jeremy clarkson who i consider a great journalist (going back to his days on Performnce Car mag) and i certainly want TG to continue.
however JC has become very wealthy through TG and RH and james may are ,i assume ,just employees who follow orders so it follows that clarkson may at times exert undue influence over them

i hope i make myself clear.

I 'think' G was trying to make sure there was no dodgy commetnts
chill peeps 8)
BACK TO TOPIC PLZ....

All the comments so far are already being discussed by the committee prior to this thread.

We are looking at around 3 other places for quotes at the mo, for a higher quality paper and resolution print quality.
also looking at a 'print only' option versus a 'design and print' option. hope to have some figures to look at soon.

The editor does not write the material or change the submitted content - just gets it all together and to teh printers, so the content is soley down to the area organisers, committee, technical advisor, and members submissions.

I personally can't wait to get a good quality format that allows printing good pics of all the fun we have at shows etc.

constructive ideas and comments are always welcome, and real hands on help is what we really need to take things forward.

Why not distribute it via the internet or on CDROM so you can add videos and more pictures than you can shake a stick at?

This would cost 20p a copy or less.

The internet option has been discussed before, and could work quite well, however it would be likely to marginalise technophobes.

AGM is the place to decide all issues, forums great for generating debate, but is not totally representative of the entire mk1 club membership.

not wishing to be controversial but we keep hearing the club mag is produced for those mk1 members who dont have internet access....out of 800 members or so how many people is this actually catering for?? ive never met a mk1 club member yet who doesnt have net access....so the idea of jeremys for a CD rom instead makes perfect sense, minimal costs but unlimited content and loads of pics.

Also the issue of funding the club mag has been mentioned a lot over the years, sorry to raise this but 800 members x £20/year is £16k! Where is that going? id say the mag takes a couple of hundred quid including postage max.

On the issue of actual submitted content, theres loads of stuff out there if someone spent a few hours browsing

Someone needs to ask at the AGM what the club is doing with all that money if there arent enough funds to produce a quality mag for the handful of people that dont use the net, thats my 2p worth.

yes a CD rom as an option for thse who want it/can use it would lower print/postage costs =D>
but why stop there what about a podcast of the mag, take it with you on your Ipod play it back through you LCD screens in your car. though I must admit to having limited sucess with the ones I fitted in the headrests in my car, viewable only if you sit on the spoiler

i agree we need a sensible look at the financing but the mag alone will be the major cost. postage alone for this this year will be 800 x 0.37 x 12 = £3552. so with printing i would say the majority of club funds goes on the mag.IMO not a good way to spend our money. why can it not be published on the web page ? any members who want a paper copy could indicate this with a voucher in the next issue. still this is just an idea the meeting is the place for constructive discussions.

Its not a monthly Mag kev !, keep up mate   , so this can at least be halved. & paul i totally agree with what you say, the technology to move the Mag on has been around for ages, unfortunately the club has stood still for slightly longer......... until Jo came along!. Jinx
You going to the AGM then Woodsy ??
