DC/DC Converter Alpine F#1 Status CDA-7990

Post by TRD|Xeno »

Any ideas how to source a DC/DC converter for this head unit? Or a similar one that provides +/- 15v from 12v source @ about 2A?

Alpine don't have the part any more (Only ~30 made it to the UK)

You need to be quite sure what the output current requirement is @ +/- 15v or you will be paying way over the odds… @ 2A, you are talking a 60w DC-DC converter!! There is no way the Alpine would be needing that.

Take a look through http://www.amplicon.co.uk/ under power conversion.

You will need a converter with a 9-18v input range (A car battery is rarely 12v!)

I would be surprised if you needed anything larger than +/- 15v @ 300mA
The DC-DC will only be running the low level analogue signal processing circuitry, not motors / display / micro etc.

Paul.

It was Alpine tech support that said 2A, that surprised me as the unit doesn't have an amplifier in it, just pre-outs, I think at 60w. Maplins don't have anything :/

9-18Vdc ±15Vdc @ 500mA 90990718 £ 21.80
9-18Vdc ±15Vdc @ 800mA 90990739 £ 28.20
9-18Vdc ±15Vdc @ 1A 90990769 £ 38.25

Minimum order 5?? :(

Have you tried over at www.talkaudio.co.uk see if anyone there may be able to point you at a decent replacement part?

Probably to an audiophyle, as an SQ winner, yes, but I don't have the quality of speakers or setup to use 10% of its features. It gets rave reviews everywhere though, the highest quality headu unit available. Looks nice, too :)

The little connector is AI-Net get one of them from alpine, connects cd changer etc. or you can get an AUX In connector for it.

not surre about the other one tho? isnt the power supply/speaker out? mabe its a connection to the multimedia manager?

i hear this headunit measures the temp/size of air space of your cab and adjusts time correction accordingly to keep your center of stereo seperation spot on.. -basically like the Time CORR on cheaper alpine units, but instead of workin out the formulas and inputting them yourself, this unit does it for you. -Mabe its the connector for the control module that does this?!!

I meant what standard is the connector (ie. it isn't ISO) I know which lines connect to it, just not which pins!

You should have gotten the adaptor lead with it when you bought it. You'll probably have to go to Alpine and ask for a replacement ISO harness adaptor.

Hmmm... they never used ot have an MOQ - what a PITA!

http://www.farnell.co.uk

and

http://rswww.com

Will sell something suitable, and in 1off, but generally the prices are not as good.

Regarding the 2A bit... perhaps that's the 12v Input current requirement?
How 'BIG' is the original one?

Do you mean the size of the wire? Its fairly thick, about 3mm... Alpine said something along the lines of 60w and 2A from the factory converter...

size of the original DC-DC converter - it will give an indication of the DC-DC converter power!
