INSURANCE REGISTERS?

My friend had a crash that was quite severe, car compleatly written off into a tree. Police and ambulance attended accident site. However, driver relatively ok, no damage to any third parties or to any property. The damaged car was removed by driver at own cost. Now, the question arrises, does the drivers insurance company need to know anything as there is no claim involved. Do the police share accident info with insurance companies? If the insurance company are made aware, will this have a detrimental effect on future premiums, even thought there was no claim? Any of you been in this situation?

You SHOULD make your insurance aware. Empahasis on should. It will increase the premium even if there is no claim made.
Remeber if you were yo crash afterwards and they did know but you didnt tell them, it gives them another way to get out of the claim.

However whats been stated above is the way to go. Covers all bases that way.

Don't worry just a joke. We had some guy going on about how we are all stupid cos insurance companies check this forum to find out if we havn't declared any mod's. He also said that he works for one and they do hunter checks for the same thing. Total nonsense. just run a search on this site for it and read the post. Its a laugh and very long!!

Incidently a hunter system check is actually done to prevent fraud so he was on about total nonsence.

Well how many people have accidents every day? Tons!

They don't all report hence why people say lets sort it privatly etc.

You telling me they are gonna ask all the police foces in the UK to check RTC's for vehicles insured by them.

Yeah some might get caught out but not by those means. It's highly unlikely put it that way. If he isn't gonna tell them then it isn't likely.

disclaimer. I am not approving not tellng insurance co's about your acidents. I am just stating that there is very little chance of them finding out.

What happens when a car is scrapped, do insurance have access to scrap records at the dvla? My friends car was given to a farmer, who said he would strip it for parts and scrap the rest later. My friend hasnt yet sent the log book off to dvla or cancelled his insurance, what do you think he should do?

No they would't check that either. Again they wouldn't have a reason to.

He should tell them though. And he should def tell the DVLA he has got rid of the car. other wise the guy could do a dodgy and make a ringer etc.

Why does he want to keep his insurance running? No claims bonus maybe? well why not just change cars? When I got rid of my first 2 I didnt get a replacement car for a few weeks so I just changed the car on the policy to my mates MK2 escort which hasn't been out of his garage for 4 years.
I did this so I could still get a ncb at the end of the policy. rather than cancelling and after 3 weeks start up another and wait a whole year for another ncb rather than 4 months.

He wasnt sure if there would be any come back from police or ambulance service, so as he hadnt reported to insurance as he thought that he would wait to make sure all is good before cancelling the policy. Already has full n/c, just doesnt want an accident logged on record, as he is thinking about buying a high performance car in the near future.

the insurance dont really need to know as they would do nothing about it and would just use it as a reason to hike up his insurance.

at the end of the day if they ever find out, which i doubt they will. you can ask them to prove it was you who was in the crash etc etc. i dont think they will bother as they dont have time to be running around like blue @rsed flies.

no other parties were involved, public property was not damaged and no claim was made....... at the end of the day, would you report an incident where you pranged your front bumper into a bollard to the insurance, even if you decided not to claim on it?

That was my thought.

As I said my friend is a worrier, and doesnt want to get into trouble, but at the same time, if he isnt making a claim, why should his premiums go up. Also my friend is pi55ed of because he wasnt even driving fast, it was a freak accident/xxxx on the road or mechanical failure or something. If he had been driving like a looney, then fair enough.

Anyway, I will tell my friend what you have said.

My friend's worry got the better of him. After making equiries about how much his premium would go up for putting the accident on reccord, the ammount on a high performance car is negligable. So he reported it!

Perhaps honesty is the best policy, that way there is no future come back!

who did the tree belong to? probably no damage to the tree but the council's usually get in touch if fences etc are damaged. They would want to know the insurance company's name etc.

The police i dont think will bother as long as no ones hurt but you did mention an ambulance turning up! The only way the insurance company will find out is, is if there was a claim made otherwise you are probably okay... sorry your mate will be okay!

Having said that they do have a collated database between the police, dvla and insurance companies but i do not know of its extent/limits etc!
