Can anyone help me with a multimedia query please????

Post by DazzaRev5Turbo »

Basically, what i would like is an in car CD/DVD/TV player. It is important that the TV reception is decent throughout London and would preferably have the freeview box. Single din or Double din are fine, prefer double din touch screen if possible.

The problem i have is i know nothing about these things, so would like for someone to either say here you are this system has all this ready or this is what you need etc etc. things im most confused about

Do i need it to have a built in TV tuner or freeview tuner? can i add a freeview tuner?

If i bought a freeview tuner (seen them on ebay about £50) would i need TV Antennas/aerials as well?

I just dont want to be left with something that doesnt work completely or with a terrible signal, so any advice would be so appreciated, even if advice differs!

i have seen this item on ebay, it does say it doesnt include antennas so must be for a reason, but this looks like it has what i need with the digi box £59 extra, any comments on this system?

I've just fitted a Pioneer AVH-P6500DVD to my tubby. Not cheap, but then good things aren't cheap and cheap things aren't good.

Single DIN, CD/DVD/MP3 player, touch screen, motorised display, etc. No built-in TV tuner, but this can be purchased as an add-on (depending on whether you want analogue or digital telly in the car).

The key feature for me was the security issue. Many of the motorised displays on eBay (or in the cheap places) look a bargain but aren't always equipped with a removable fascia. I didn't fancy installing a few hundred quid's worth of kit to have someone put the window through!

I visited my local ICE emporium this lunch time (very handy working at the top of Tottenham Court Road! :D ) and enquired about TV tuners for the car. The guys in the shop seemed to agree that aerial choice for the TV add-ons was absolutely critical, but couldn't say if the picture quality, etc, etc would be any good as there are too many factors. They didn't rate the universal boxes either - even those that are more expensive that the branded Kenwood or Pioneer units.
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

Although 2xDIN stereos rarely have removeable fascias, they are usually code protected.
I know the Kenwood, Alpine and Pioneer all have the facility to enter a security code.

As for the ones off ebay, I searched around and found the website of the manufacturer, downloaded the instruction manuals and, apparently, they have code facilities too.

Must admit, I was disappointed that the Kenwood one I bought didn't come with any window stickers announcing that it does, in fact, have an anti-theft system.
I just knocked a couple of authentic looking warnings up on my PC and stuck em in the T-Bar panels where they can easily be seen.

I made the choice to go for a Kenwood HU purely cos I am using it with a kenwood satnav unit and I wanted it to have full touch-screen functionality.
If I just wanted it for TV/DVD I think I'd go for one of the ones off ebay and then buy an amplified aerial to make sure the picture was as good as possible.
