My SW20 so far. (56k = fly to NZ instead)

Post by Romanv »

I thought some of you people might like to see how my SW20 has progressed over the last while, and what I've wasted my summers doing basically. :P

It started out life as a fairly ordinary gen 1 NA SW20.

However after a significant amount of gravel bashing, general abuse, and people opening their doors into my car, I decided to give it a respray. 8)

However the factory 14"s just werent cutting it anymore, so I decided to get some new wheels.

Along the way I've also managed to hoard some gen 3 bits, and decided to put them on.

By now the engine had done 200,000 odd kms, and was getting a bit tired.
An opportunity came up that I couldnt resist... buying a blown redtop 3sge to rebuild. 8)(See why below, old piston!)
Along the way, I also sourced/paid for/stole/borrowed/:P:
Cusco 3 puck clutch, cusco chromoly flywheel, port & polished head, balanced crank/flywheel/rods/pistons, apexi/HKS intake, TOMs extractors, new pistons, rings, belts, waterpump, etc. etc.

It's still a work in progress however, but I am hoping to have it completed over the long Easter weekend.
Once it's finished, it's going into the paint shop to get a blue pearl put over the black paint, and some more clearcoat.

Yeah, so that's about it so far. 8)

I've got a few more DIY projects up my sleeve, but I've really got to concentrate on getting my other ones finished first, eg. getting the car going and road legal.

P.S. Is there a prize, for 'longest post ever?' :P

Yeah it has been a lot of hard work indeed.

I cant wait to get it on the road again, I havent driven it since December.

And before that, I think it was only on the road for 9 months or so.

Okay guys! Sorry about the lack of updates, I've been busy!

Basically, the cam timing on my redtop was farked.
It was back firing out the intake. :?
My only option was to pull the engine back out.
So do I pull it out, and fix it?
Hell no! I buy another redtop to put in instead.
My other redtop engine is going back on the engine stand, and I'm going to do it up a bit more. I'm going to start investigating more mods for it, when I've gotten the car on the road and legal etc.

the following is basically a cut + paste from another thread I posted elsewhere.

I got another beams motor, a 30,000kms old engine, from an ST202 front cut. In impeccable condition. 8)

I can see why no sane person would want to try and mount a FWD engine in an MR2, a few things are quite a bit different. :? Mainly to do with coolant lines etc however.

So the fuel rail, coolant lines, flywheel, clutch, Rocker cover cover, Intake manifold, water pump lines, front pulley, extractors, coolant neck, alternator + bracket, and RHS engine mount got swapped over from the MR2 engine. I didnt need to swap the intake manifold and rocker cover cover, but the badges are the wrong way up on the celica ones. :P

This is the celica motor:

MR2 motor: (Note that the oil pump pulley looks different? weird!)

Celica engine with MR2 bits on:

One interesting thing that I noticed, is that the celica front pulley has two different sized pulleys on it... It would seem that the celica runs something at about half speed compared to the other... Perhaps the MR2 spins the alternator faster than the celica, to compensate for the extra load from the EHPS?

Hopefully if the weather holds out, and I can get someone to help, I will be able to get the motor mounted in the car tomorrow.
Practice really does make perfect! I can get the motor in/out in only a few hours, and mostly by myself now... Just need help getting the left and right mounts in.
whereas the first time we put it in, it took pretty much all day, and there was about four of us.
Although having four of you + beers is probably not the most efficient way to do a two man job. :)

Okay after that all happened, I got my engine in, and started up. 8)

and it ran great!

However, my clutch was slipping to bu88ery.

Once I pulled the motor back out, it wasnt that my clutch was slipping.
It was because the turbo gearbox runs a larger spline on the input shaft of the gearbox, and therefore a larger spline on the clutch plate.

(However I didnt check any of this, as I was told that they were identical! ](*,) stupid stupid stupid)

So my clutch plate basically rounded itself off around the gearbox spline.

Goodbye cusco clutch plate. ](*,)

So I swapped my cusco flywheel for the NA equivilent, and will be ordering the TRD clutch kit this week.

Also, last week I bought brand new toyo proxes all round, no point in getting back on the road with crappy tires. 8)

The hard work will pay off Im sure mate......

Could you answer a question, as I dont know whether this is a myth that has built up over a while and feed by misinformation due to lack of experience with this lump, but is the block alloy or good old iron???

Thanks in advance
Ross

Definitely iron block, as are all 3S engines. :)
