Momo gear knob

I have just purchased a Momo F16 gear knob, went to fit it tonight and realised that it sits too high. My question is, is it sensible to cut the gear lever down to size so the Momo sits lower?
I need to cut about 40mm off the lever (just below the threaded section). I realise that I will not be able to fit the standard knob back on if ever I need to but just wondered if any of you guys have had to do this.

just a warning to anyone - don't ever buy the momo chrome ball knob, I had one a few years ago, within 6 months the "chrome" had flaked off leaving a tarnished looking base metal eye-sore... real sporty

And no - I don't have toxic hand sweat.
