Need help choosing components please

Post by mushky »

Theres some sales on that end today and I've narrowed down my choices to the ones below. I know it comes down to personal preferences but I can't really get a chance to audition all of these. Hopefully someone can shed some light as to which ones to get. I want a clear sound, but not too harsh.

Going to be run off a JBL amp, along with a 10" sub.

Either these Focal 165A for £105 delivered
http://www.alphacaraudio.co.uk/shop/ind ... ts_id=1176

Or these Rainbow SLX265 for £98 delivered
http://www.raysmith.co.uk/product_info. ... ts_id=1174

Or these Phoenix Gold ZR for £100
http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/produc ... /3159.html

The phoenix gold ones seem to be the most expensive normally but this doesn't necessarily mean they sound the best (eg bose)

Please help, need to order up today if poss.
Cheers :)

Hi,

I have the Focal 165A, nice speakers but I'm not much of an expert. The tweaters will also fit in the stock location if you fasten them in with a hot glue gun. I needed spacers to fit main speakers in, which are easy enough to make from MDF, I also had to cut away a lot of the back of the door card.

HTH,

Nik

I am swaying towards the Focals at the moment as they are the only ones I have heard out of the 3 and I liked them. I might like the others better I guess but at least I won't be disappointed.

Thanks for your help :)

I have a set of Focal 165V2's. They are absolutely excellent.. but then as you said it depends what you are after - quality or volume? I have had various makes in the past but these are by far the best... the sound quality is absolutely amazing....can you guess what my money would be on?! :)

Definately quality.

Is there any other reason why these are twice the price, apart from being thinner? http://www.alphacaraudio.co.uk/shop/ind ... ts_id=1327

Do you think the larger cheaper ones will fit if I make a spacer out of MDF?

Cheers :)

The difference between these 2 Focals is that they are from different ranges.

The 165A Come from the access range.. which is Focal's entry level.

and the 165V's are from the Polyglass range, which I think are the next range along.

The different ranges are made from different materials.

I have not heard any speakers from the Access range, but the Polyglass speakers are the ones that have won all the awards.

As for fitting, I don't know about fitment into an MR2, but I would imagine you wouldn't have any issues.. the old MDF spacers usually help

And.. IIRC someone posted a thread a while abck about fitting some 3 Way Focals into an MR2.... if you can find it, it might give you a few tips.

I have the Phoenix Gold ZR's in my 2 ...and they ROCK! I can't imagine any speakers being even slightly better than these (for the price)! IMHO of course!

Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated :)

I managed to pick up a set of DLS R6a 2nd hand for a good price so problem solved.... until I try to get the magnets through the door that is!

Wish me luck! :)
