[Mk2 Turbo] what rpm on choke?

Post by Quigonjay »

warmed up my car ticks over at about 8/850 rpm, i'm assuming this is how it should be?
from cold (on choke) it usually ticks over at about 11-1200rpm, i'm assuming this is also correct?
however, this morning after work in the freezing wether it was ticking over at 14-1500 for a while  , is this normal when its so cold?
Also, how long does everyone elses car stay on choke for? mine takes ages to warm up
cheers

the 1400 does sound a bit high but could be just because of the cold.

My own rev3 takes 10-15 minutes to warm up depending on weather and traffic. I changed the thermostat on mine last christmas as it just didn't warm up at all

In winter, with temperatures around freezing, my rev1 idles at 1700 rpm on choke :o There's also quite some light grey fog from the exhausts for the first few minutes. After that, the idle will gradually come down until it's at 900 or so when the coolant's warmed up.
In summer it'd be somewhere around 1200-1300 from a cold start.

I'd like to hear more rev1 owners experiences about this, as 1700 seems a bit high :?

Jay mine sounds like yours, it is pretty cold up here at the mo!
I changed my thermostat about a month back because it was broke, no problems now :)

On mine -

Freezing morning - idle @1750
Cold morning - idle @1500
Summer morning idle @1000-1200
Idle once engine has warmed up properly (around 15mins driving) is 800.

Sounds fine to me chap :)

My old rev2 mk2 used to idle anywhere between 1200-1500rpm on cold days (depending on time of year) before warm.

The missus' mk1 when cold idles at 1700rpm this time of year...first time I got in it was bizarre!

Mine sounds similar too.

You'll find that a good condition iggy system will keep your revs as low as they'll get. At 80 on the motorway in 5th I rev at 3,500 with new plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm and HT leads. Before it would rev at 3,650 for the same speed. Means slightly less fuel consumption too \:D/
