Arial going up but not down?

Arial going up but not down?
Dont know if this problem has been posted before but for some reason my Arial on my Mk1 goes up like it should when you turn the radio on but wont go down after turning it off unless you turn the ignition off then back on again? Any ideas why?

If my memory serves me correctly, the MkII 
(which I have) aerial set-up works on detecting when the stereo is turned on and off, via an AMP feed as well as an AERIAL one. I suspect the MkI is the same and wonder whether you have a bad earth or crossed connections somewhere..?
Have you pulled the head-unit out to make sure all your wiring is sound..? Worth a look if you haven't.
