The 'search' function

Post by Sidewinder »

I guess one of the reason why we have so many reposts on IMOC-UK is that the Search function is pretty basic.

However...before I go on about it:

1. I guess this is standard functionality
2. I haven't got a beef about reposts...

Anyway, if searching for something, say some info on the company Fancy Plates, there is no way to define this properly - even using quotes around the search text, so the results come back as any post with the word 'fancy' and/or the word 'plates'.

I guess we're just too used to the search functionality of Google (with the use of '+' and '-' and stuff), but was wondering how difficult it would be to alter things.

Ta!

See my post in here: auto search.

I thought it was a great idea but others didn't seem to agree. :eye:

Using google API we now have google search's integrated within the forum... I have just got this working on the test site so expect to see it here soon.

Only problem is we are limited to 1000 search's a day..so I will just have to keep an eye on it.

I don't disagree with you on that, it's just a case of fine tuning the Search function. Unless I'm searching for one-word subjects like 'Apexi' or 'HKS' I don't bother using it for my reason mentioned above.

As the site grows in size and complexity, managing the data will become critical to prevent some utter gems disappearing under the weight of...er...non gems. :)

The Google API sounds a great idea - just a shame about the 1000 search limit!

We will just have to see how close we get to the limit. But yeah the API should provide a good search for us.

I will be looking to improve the native search as well...
