Hi all,
I have owned 7 MR2's now over 15 years.
I have just pick up a 1998 rev 4 t-bar NA. Unfortunately it will not start and I'm hoping someone can help.
The engine turns over, I have a spark and I can hear the fuel pump running for a couple of seconds after each time I try to start it.
Does anyone know of common faults etc or best place to start looking?
Thanks
Paul

Hi paul.
Normal basics i would check is EFI 15amp fuse i know this stops the injectors but cant say if it stops fuel pump.
Have you checked engine compression?
Base timing? Maybe it slipped a tooth?
If you have fuel, spark and timing there isnt alot to stop it from starting.
Check the capacitors on the ecu?
Does the car have an immobiliser?
Is the car automatic? Faulty park switch maybe?
Just my 2p but hope it may help

Thanks for the advice. Will check the efi fuse. Do you know the location at all?
It is a manual by the way.
Thanks

Yes mate its in the engine bay passenger side rear (boot end) the cover is labled. May be worth giving all the fuses and relays a check and a wiggle.
Re: [Mk2] [NA] Non starter
Ah, yes checked all those!
I will keep hunting.
Thanks again

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Non starter
Have you checked for fault codes with the toyota service tool (paperclip)
Sorry forgot to mention that

No I haven't yet. Have a code reader but not correct plug! Seen the paperclip method so will give that a try.

Our cars run a obd1 system so obd2 code readers wont actually work. If they do they wont tell you anymore that the flash codes on dash.
Let me know if you get stuck or need to know what the codes mean

That's great. Thanks for your help. Will let you know how I get on.

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Non starter
had a similar issues with one car i bought to sell on. I bought it as a none runner but a REV3 delivered for £150 was to good to pass up on as i would get more money back scrapping it if it never started.
Had fuel and spark but wouldn't start.
Changed the coil pack and ignitor all in one and off she started. Just don't forget to bolt it in place as the bracket is it's earthing.
The spark was obviously not a good enough one to start the car.
£150 turned into £2k over night LOL

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Non starter
So it's turning over with a spark but not firing, are the plugs wet?
Re: [Mk2] [NA] Non starter
I have noticed the alternator has seized and snapped the belt. What sort of job is it to replace the alternator? I can't see any way of getting it out without dismantling half the car!
Re: [Mk2] [NA] Non starter
You can do the alternator from side/ underneath with wheel off. It is tight and from memory it fails on the block or a bracket but with a small pry bar it does come out. The bracket is ALWAYS tight as hell but persistance does pay off. Took me two cups of tea three fags and about two hours
Re: [Mk2] [NA] Non starter
Thanks for that. I don't smoke but think I might by the time I've done it!
Re: [Mk2] [NA] Non starter
when i did my alternator i happened to have the rear crossmember and suspension strut off the car. it was a 10 min job to get the alternator off. if i did it again i would definitely take the crossmember off for access, it doesnt take long and it makes is easy.
Re: [Mk2] [NA] Non starter
Ok, so thought I should share this for anyone with similar starting issues.
After checking everything everything over the past couple of weeks I established there was fuel getting g to the fuel rail, I had a spark and compression so it had to be a breather or vacuum problem.
Turned out the fuel rail actuator was seized.
A bit of WD40 and opening and closing the actuator manually, it fired up first time!

Glad you sorted it but I did ask

that would of given it away without the need for compression testing and what not but that's moot now it's sorted anyhow.
