Is it a GT or a GT-S?

Post by outrun »

My Rev 2 turbo came with a bootlid that said GT-S, but it means not a lot, in the grand scheme of it.
The V5c just says MR2 Coupe, but when I checked the car once on Total Car Check (iirc), it came back as a GT.

It has turning fogs, did the GT-S ever come with these? Plus half leather. Maybe it once had folding mirrors from new (it has them again now) or maybe it never had half leather seats.

I know it isn't vastly important, but how do you tell?

Just looked on Total Car Check, My Car Check and DVLA and all just say MR2.
I have definitely seen it somewhere.

I believe things like full leather seats, turning fogs, folding mirrors, climate control etc came as standard on the GT, but were available as optional extras on the GT-S.

Its all pretty academic really, as so much may well have been swapped over over the years.

But if you enter your vin number on this website it should tell you whether your car left the factory as a GT or a GT-S

Cheers, Paul. That is the kinda thing I was after. By climate control, is it just the analogue slider? Or is there another type?

Still unsure lol. This seems to imply GT-S?

Couldn't see anyone going to the hassle of fitting the fogs, really. No mention of interior trim, though!
As you say, it matters little, but I may as well badge it correctly...

If it is a GT, do you know if the 'GT' letters are the same size as the 'GT-S' ones?
If so, I will just cut the hyphen and S off my badge. Or get one from an N/A GT. They look about the same.

The differences in the turbo variants have to be the most pointless, ever.
One model would surely have done.

Sooo conficious!

GT - all the the fat for a 'Grand Tourer' (unless you didn't pick all of the options at the dealers)

GT-S all the best bits of the fat, but a bit trimmed because 'Sport' (FTW) (unless you wanted the nicer bits of fat with a GT-S badge)

G-Limited The cheaper one, but with lots of extras.

G The cheap one.

But to make things confusing Toyota allowed the ordering customer to order any level of spec they desired within these models with the exception of turbo being available for GT or GTS only. But you could spec up your G or G-limited to include any extras (bar turbo) that were available across the range.

So to answer the question (sort of) unfortunately the DIY site can't say if a car was GT or GT-S or it's level of trim. The differences in the turbo variants are what keep mr2 nerds scratching their heads about :thumleft:

The GT and the GT-S badges are the same size, if you have a GT-S badge i'd say don't trim it down - they seem to be the not often seen one around for a while.

For what it's worth I think the overall width of the GT-S badge is slightly more than that of the GT badge, but the lettering on the GT-S badge looks a bit smaller, so I don't think cutting off the -S would work.

But personally I wouldn't bother any way.

My rev 2 originally came without any badge at all, and only sports a GT badge now, because that was what was on the first tidy black boot lid I could find following a kind lady re-arranging the rear of my car a couple of years ago.

If it did not have folding mirrors when you bought the car or the window switch with the power fold button, and it has GT-S on the boot I would guess that it is originally a GT-S. Unless there are any obvious clues that the boot lid was ever switched or folding mirrors removed? Does the car have aircon also?

It had dark blue boot hinges and inhex bolts holding the lid on. The trunking for the door looms wasn't attached everywhere, either (broken tabs).
It did have A/C, yeah.

Cheers everyone, just one of those daft mysteries, eh?

Hmm it is an odd one, I understand why you want to know though, I would want to know if it was my car.. Even though it really does not matter! Both are equally good cars but I get the curiosity!

Maybe the boot was changed for some reason for a spoiler or something and so lost the original one with GT badge. Loads of log books on these cars got messed up with GT/GTi/Coupe and insurance c0ck ups with turbo and non turbo models, 1990 G reg cars imported in 1999 and given V registrations and such. Then online searches being a bit hazy. All makes it hard to tell sometimes, plus the cars being so old now that previous owners chopped and changed parts. I`d give Toyota a ring see if they can confirm for sure.

I have continued the trend, fitting a forged Rev 3 engine, I have a Rev 5 spoiler and dial faces and I surprised even myself by fitting and preferring the Rev 3 tail lights.
So I may confuse a potential future buyer, too.

Good shout on asking Toyota. I may well do when I am next in there paying 30 quid for a little plastic clip or something.

I'm all for a mix and match world :thumleft:

Following a rear end shunt I had the boot floor and lower rear panel replaced with parts taken from a rev3 as I couldn't source the parts from a rev2. But at least that meant my rev 3 lights fitted straight on without having to reach for the hammer :D

Also, if you trim the badge down you will most likely have a nice factory fresh area of paint to stand out around your 20x year old sun faded paint!
