Hi,
Can anyone give me the best manufacturers to look at for the following:
Pistons
Conrods
Bearings
Head Gaskets
And any suggestions for companies in the UK for gas flowing cylinder heads

This guy was recommended to me for head flow stuff:

Everything else, what are you aiming for? FI or NA screamer?

Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
Also looking for some HKS 256/264 cams too...I know they are rare though
Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
If you want to keep N/A and are looking at those costs, not thought of a Rev3 3SGE? More than 50 horses more off the starting blocks.

Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
I'm aware of the costs before anyone chips in, but I want to keep engine that came with the car.
Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
Its ok, I can understand the appeal, but for power upgrades there are other options that's all.

Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
It's not really worth gas flowing the big port head. The ports are too big anyway. You can smooth out around the valve guides which is what was done with mine.
But really you need a late small port engine to see better gains.
Do HKS not still sell the cams? Can you not buy them new? Of course you'll need matching verniers. Toda also make good camshafts.
I've got 264/256 HKS cams in my engine.
To get some gains, much higher compression forged pistons would be the way forward. You really need to look at what the AE86 lot do as tuned 4AGE's are far more common than they are in the MR2. Though in saying that relatively few in the UK go for much in the way of tuning the 4AGE. But to do a full build up a small port late engine with the oil squirters is a far, far more preferable option.
Plenty of info on club 4AG: http://www.club4ag.com/forums/

Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
Hi Lauren,
I'm on club4ag and have been talking to them a lot.
I'm going for around 11.5 CR so probably wiesco or arias, or may stretch to CP Pistons.
I've been advised tomei poncams are a good alternative than HKS if I can't get them. They are also cheaper though from the USA.
I need to find out the cc of my head first however before I determine what HG thickness to go for too.

Sorry mate didn't mean that rudely. This forum isn't really aimed (I don't think) with modding the 4AGE, rather chucking other engines in.

I did not take offence, I know what its like everyone says "3SGTE it" or "V6 it". Was just my 2p worth as I am looking at a 3SGE possibly, as compromise between power, weight and fun.

Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
If you look further afield there are several tuning companies that cater for the 4age. It's a shame more people don't consider N/A engines worth doing these days, I guess that's because a turbo engine is easier to upgrade.
Try http://www.mrpltd.co.nz/product/290/7ag ... -1-9l.html
they do a stroker kit plus other parts.
Also http://www.matrixgarage.com/store/mk1-m ... ccessories
There's also several Japanese tuning companies as well

I've been on those
Will probably end up getting the poncams from there (matrix garage) if i cannot source second hand HKS. I did consider a 7age but I've got to buy a bottom end from somewhere. I was given a complete block and head so that's why i'm going down that route.
The owner of the matrix garage is on club4ag and he's a very helpful and knowledgeable chap too. He gave me a number of a 4AGE tuner here in the UK who I have to call.
Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
There used to be a couple of Irish guys who built really well sorted corolla and starlet rally cars can't think of their names just now but the cars would give a full house mk2 escort a run for the money on tarmac
Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
Richard Macer RMSport.
Dave Brooks Race Engines.
AutocraftUK Ltd Wolverhampton
RMSport is the 4a-ge man. Has been for a long time. Can build anything from road spec to full Formula Atlantic type engines.
Autocraft have had some bad press in the past, they now build some decent 3s-gte motors and screaming N/A Hondas. The owner has just taken my rusty mk1.5 off my hands for use as a mule. I think he has something 400bhp+ planned.
Dave Brooks is primarily a ford man, however he built our rally engine which puts out 167bhp at the wheels but drives and behaves like a standard unit.
You need a standard 4a-gze block, crank and rods, high comp pistons and a small port head machined and built for a high lift cam, maybe something like the 11mm 272 from cat cams.
What induction and ECU are you thinking?

Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
You would be better off with an AE92 bottom end with the oil squirters and oil return, it's stronger too. The whole engine is what you need as small port head comes with it. Honestly if you're going for a full on build, it makes no sense to use an earlier engine.
I didn't worry about it with mine. I just wanted a lightly tuned road engine.

Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
Lauren you probably spent more money on yours than I'm going to with with mine and your saying you used the earlier block?
I've been given assurances from a Formula Atlantic engine builder that the earlier block can take up to 200hp as that's what his son was running in his corollas over the years.
I'm using mk1b crank and buying h-beam conrods.
Aw11rally, i'm sticking with the stock ECU as i'm not looking at silly power. Reason my engine is a bit cack, is the compression or lack of. So bumping it up.
I'll contact RMSport

Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
Yeah I have - they look similar to the poncams i'm considering. Probably come in at same price too with a lot less hassle!
Does anyone know the power the stock mk1b rods can take?

Re: Upgraded Engine Parts
To be fair we all know the GE block can take 200bhp no problem as it's the same block for the early GZE's. The rods won't have a problem, same for GZE. You won't make anywhere near the torque, so not an issue.
Think I spent a fair bit on all OEM parts. Not a single pattern part even down to every washer and spark plug etc.
But, I wasn't interested in going for a higher power build, but then again by the sounds of it, neither are you. Mine made 122bhp on the rollers, though with better cam timing (now sorted) and a few other things being optimised I expect I'll be able to make 130-135bhp. With a bit more compression you may see 145bhp.
Raising the compression may affect fueling and timing so you may need to consider aftermarket ECU's. But, you can check the fueling on a rolling road to see where it's at.
With the cams, if you go more than 264 duration you will need an aftermarket ECU. Out of the available Piper Cams there is only the 288 really. That will likely need uprated valve springs too.
