17" Advan SA3r's

Post by Mr Yoshi »

Hi,

I've recently bought some 17" Advan SA3r's that are in really good condition and have the centre plates and coins and are perfect offset (rear 38, front 35) for the MR2. The only thing I don't have is the plastic tool to remove the plates and c-clip that hold the coin in place.

The wheels are straight and have very little kerbing, but the paint is flaking and they need a refurb to bring them up to standard. I realise it's going to be impossible to find the plastic tool given the rarity of the wheels and was wondering if anyone knows how to remove the coin's without the tool and without causing damage?

Also, the previous owner thought the centre 3 spoke section is magnesium. Does anyone know if this is the case for certain? I'll be sending them to the best wheel specialist I can find, but I want to inform them if they're dealing with magnesium.

I might go for a colour change to tame them a little and match my car! I'm not decided though, as the old school colours might just grow on me and look mega with my black turbo.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks.

99% sure that's not the case. SA3R's aren't particularly light, they are about average for a cast wheel of a similar size. They will be aluminium alloy. Super Advan Version 2's have cast spokes and a forged barrel which are welded together. They are lighter.

Any pair of circlip pliers to remove the circlip holding the coins in will do. Once the clip is out you'll just have to use a big adjustable spanner to carefully loosen the nut.

For the nuts buy a piece of nylon or delrin sheet and make your own spanner with it and pray there not seized on seen no end of them needing chiseled off

The circlips aren't anything unusual, try pming above the rim on here i think i gave him an original circlip with my old wheels he may be willing to measure it for you but be aware there's a certain way you have to measure circlips

Thanks everyone for all the info provided - it's really helpful. I have to say been relatively new to the forum, that everyone on hear who's given advice when asked, or I have sold parts, or bought parts from me have been really cracking people! What an awesome resource the forum is for MR2 owners.

All the nuts and plates are free, so I just need to think of the best way to remove tighten, in future. I'm intrigued thomp1983 how do I make my own spanner?

The circlips measure approx 450mm diameter (from advice how to measure a circlip on google) and approx 180mm from hole to hole, so I just need to get the right circlip pliers.

Thanks 2mad, I reckon they're ace and will look great when I get them sorted. I spent a fortune on new Work Emotion TR7's, in ashed titan bronze, thinking I'd never find Advans. So couldn't believe my luck!

Are your Advans 17" with similar offsets? Are you running with coilovers? I'm going to have coilovers fitted shortly. My Work's are rear ET 38 and front ET32, so perfect for coilovers. Will I have trouble on the fronts with the Advans at ET35?? Suppose it's nothing camber bolts couldn't sort?

oh and Gazza_DJ I was suprised that they are such a comparatively heavy wheel. I have to admit I thought they would be much lighter!

Ps. i ran et35 front with spacers (making et32) no problem with my coilovers (cusco) on lowest setting :thumleft:

They aren't particularly heavy, they just aren't particularly light either.

Spanner

Buy a cheap plastic chopping board, grab the centre cap draw round the outside on the chopping board so you have a circle.

Grab one of the nuts turn it over so the hex side is against the chopping board centre it in the circle and draw round it.

Use a jigsaw to cut the inside of the hex out and around the outside of the circle

Cut a 2 inch wide strip off the side of the board the full length of the board. Drill 2 holes near the end of the strip drill matching holes in the edge of the circle piece bolt them together with countersunk bolts and you've got a spanner that won't damage the wheels.

Also id recheck those ciclip sizes 450mm is 45cm which is clearly wrong and from memory 45mm sounds too big aswell

I used ... putting a toil round the nut ... then massive grips .. and was super gental so as not to mess up the nut 8-[

Thanks for all the further info and advice, love the spanner idea thomp1983 definately give that a go!

I had a bit of spare time to see what they looked like on the car today and also noticed that it isn't the original paint on the Advans. At some point they've had a re-spray, which was further confirmed by googling the original colours the SA3R's came from the factory in.

Anyway....what do you think? Work vs Advan. Advans in a different colour?? The Works are a cracking colour that the photos don't do justice.

Go for it with the pic whoring of Advans.......I need ideas!!

I will sound like a hand jockey so i'm really sorry  But to my eyes the Works suit your car better. Maybe it's just not the right angle.

BUT I do love advans, as does any self respecting mr2 owner  so maybe a more subtle colour would do wonders. Love the colour on your Works, should work well on these too. But with the polished lips.

You don't sound like a hand jockey at all danjama!! It's exactly the type of comment I'm after, that's why I posted the photos. To be honest that's the direction my thoughts are going too. I think the Advans may suit the MR2 better, but the colours are all wrong. The Works are an amazing colour, even better in the metal and I wouldn't have dreamed of changing them, if it wasn't for coming across the Advans up for sale locally. I reckon the bronze with a polished lip will look fantastic. It will also look better when I have my coilovers fitted and the 2's dropped slightly.

Something like these version 2's with a bronze centre....dribble.........

Agreed. Sort a ride height that you're happy with, then decide which wheels look best. Might make all the difference.

I had my advans refurbed last year in candy apple red. Over the moon with how well they look
