Post by Carolyn »

Hi Everyone,

This weekend i am traveling 300 miles,To view an MR2 MK1 with a veiw to buy,Can anyone give me any other advice what to be carefull of when purchasing the car,Any paticular areas, points i should look out for apart from the obvious,as this will be my first MR2,I am more concerned the car is mechanicly sound then anything else, any paticular noises i have to listen out for, over heating etc,any parts of the engine i should paticuly need to observe. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

...just ignore all of her advice on spare wheels though.

Hi welcome to the world of mk1s.just a few starters .they all rust on the rear arches and the rear corners.check in the boot in the corners there will be a space on each side under the carpet which goes to the bottom of the rear corner.you will probably find rust and may find them full of water!these are problems that can be fixed but will effect the price.check the bottom edge of the front wings near the door again a rust trap.inside the door returns front and rear ,rust at the bottom near the front hinges and rear near the floor again fixable but not so easy. underneath normal things no holes etc,but check along the raised "rib" each side and the sills.another area that allways goes is inside the rear arches at the end of the sills.
as for engines if it does not smoke and pulls strongly all through the rev range with a noticable surge at about 4500 you should be ok.uneven tick over is a common problem but is not a disaster and could be a good bargaining point.no strange noises and reguler service history is good.cam belt change desirable.
check all the electrics, windows are a usual problem area and head light motors.does the aerial work?
interiors are usually reasonable,if its leather expect cracked seats, they all go.its nice to have the sun roof shade,or t-bar shades and bags.also nice to have a full tool kit and owners manual.
this was supposed to be a quick reply but i`ve rambled on a bit .if you are worried about anything i would advise asking here first.unless you are getting a real bargain that needs to be snapped there are plenty of good mk1s about.if you post a question here loads of people will help, from enthusiasts to full time mr2 mechanics.
just be sure to buy one they are the best mr2 you can buy for your money.you wont find a more fun and reliable car once you get the little things sorted out.the best fun per pound you can buy.

I think that's probably the first mention of Lauren's spare wheel incident since these new forums went live! :D

Hi Carolyn,

From a completist point of view this is one of the best guides:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/nick.chall ... mk1bg.html

I would print this out and take it with you.

What year is the car you are going to see and where is it just out of interest?

When I bought mine, I used this and other guides like it to make my own checklist. It was then easy to see after inspecting it, where the cars strong points and weak points were without forgetting to check anything. This will make it a lot easier for you to make your mind up if it's worth buying or not.
Hope this helps.

Best of luck with it Carolyn, hope it turns out to be a good un. If all does go well hope to see you at some mk1club and MR2OC meets in the future.
If your interested, if you PM'ed your email address to me I will let you know when the monthly mk1club meets kick off. Up to you, but I reckon they will tend to be your way when we start up, no they will be that way as I have to sort it all out :)
