MR2 starting problems

Post by mymr2 »

Hi !
I am located in Norway is currently having some problems with my 1991 model MR2, type W2-2,0

Recently it has been raining heavily and some days ago the car suddenly stopped without any warning. The dashboard lights came on as the engine stopped.

The car was towed to my home garage and a squirt of start-gas indicated no spark. Distributer cap and rotor proved to be in good condition, but no inlet voltage to the coil was found. The measurement was taken at the inlet plug (+ and - lead) leading to the coil unit.

I searched further into the fuse box located on the L/H side of the engine compartment and measured across the fuse ”fuse ECU-IG 7,5 A” located between” ignition main relay” and ” ignition coil” result was 10.81 VDC with ingnition on .....?

The voltage going in to ” ignition main relay” is 12.8 VDC ( 2 big cabelshoes ) and the relay "clicks" when ignition is turned on.

I am wondering if there might be a broken cable between ” ignition main relay” and the plug going into the coil amybe in addition to ” ignition main relay” beeing bad due to only 10,81 VDC measured over ”fuse ECU-IG 7,5 A”

I have to mention that above measurements were done while the large plug on the "igniter" was removed due to cramped space including distributor cap/HT lead to coil, but I doubt that this should inflict on the result.

My local Toyote garage doesn't know the car and will search for faults on a hourly basis, their rate you might probably not beleive ...........

Has anybody encountered similar problems or point me in the right direction ?

Kind regards
John Steiner

Take the coil and ignitor off the car. Clean up the brackets as the ignitor uses this to earth. Also inspect the coil. The coil casing can crack and let in moisture. If it is cracked, bring it in the house to dry then once dry you can seal the cracks with rtv sealant. Or buy a new coil but seal and use the old one until the new one comes.

I sealed mine 4 years ago as a short term measure until I bought a new one and it is still on the car and working in the rain now

Hi again ! Coil & igniter is removed from the enginebay and looks good with no cracks. I measured the primary to approx 0,5 ohm, but the secondary came out with approx 14,3 Gohm. My manual states between 10 and 14 Kohm. Would this mean a new coul unit ? Kind regards JohnS
