1992 N/A

Post by Darkzy433 »

Hi guys,

I'm picking up my n/a tomorrow. Was first off wondering if there is anything I should look out for when buying apart from t-top seals, windscreen rust and door sills as well as the alternator + rad, boot releases that sort of thing.

Secondly it's completely standard apart from aluminium radiator what would you first mod recommendations be.

I'm probably going to go with a decent set of coilovers + tyres first. As I love the feel of coilies and i've heard the tubby's can be a bit finicky on what shoes they are wearing.

Thanks guys.

I'll jump in with my 2p

As for boots you want to make sure you have a stagger. If it is still on the oem wheels then they are staggered widths and you want tyres with 20-30 mm more width rear to front.

I like uniroyal rainsport 3. i have also run toyo proxes but found they wear quick. Look on camskill and you'll be surprised at what you can get for your money.

With the age of the cars now the suspension and steering components are likely to be shot and on their last legs. Ball joints and bushes... You can get complete chassis set of prothane bushes from sbits for around £100.

On the coilovers... A lot of people run them and like them but for me and a road car i don't see the advantage other than being able to slam the thing. A decent -30mm set of springs and new inserts in the struts (£25 each from TCB) will dramatically improve the handling over tired suspension.

Next up are brakes. Braided hoses can firm up the pedal. If all calipers are working fine and pads and discs are fine then a min is a bleed through with fresh fluid unless you know its been done recently. If any of the calipers are binding (not uncommon on mr2) then a clean up of sliders and re grease with red grease can sort out probs, otherwise biggred do rebuild kits for £30 ish for each axle pair.

As you mentioned sills rot out. They rot from the inside out so if you find bubbling paint then its time for fresh metal coz you know as soon as you rub it back there will be a gaping hole and the inner sill box section will need remedial work.

Ignition components like the dizzy and rotor arm are best replaced if unknown. The coil packs can crack and let in moisture (I found mine was cracked 4 years ago so i dried it out and filled the cracks with rtv with no probs since) and aftermarket ht leads can cause problems.

Otherwise it the same things as any other older car that may have been poorly repaired by 30 people or cosseted by one quality mechanic.

I you get a good one they just go and go and start and stop and go. Even with hg probs mine would always start!

Hi,

Thanks for your input.

I just picked up the car, will need a clutch replacement so will be doing a couple of other bits at same time probably water pump, t-stat and cam belt + ac belt. Perhaps a rocket cover gasket too but it's not leaking.

The suspension is all being sorted bushes new tie rod ends, ARB drop links.
I have new disks and pads coming and a seal kit for all calipers.(didn't need them but I always like knowing they are fresh on cars i've just bought. I will get some braided brake lines sometime soon as well as a braided clutch line.

I've also got a short throw shifter coming.

The car has different wheels, not sure if staggered. But they'll probably be getting changed.

With regards to coilovers i'm intending to 3sgte swap it which may happen or I may just wait and then buy a turbo but considering the work i'll be putting in it'll prob be a swap. but i may get springs for the short term as the maintenance bits have left me a bit low on £££

The sills funnily enough look pretty damn good but it's getting resprayed because the previous owner did some artwork on the car.. A good job however not to my liking (see pic)

I've got a Turbo bootlid with the spoiler as well as a new front bumper as well.

I can't post links so it's on image shack then its /

Not sure I'd call that artwork...

Is it the blue one with the bubbles?

For the short shifter you would be better off with rev 3 shifter. Aftermarket ones can ruin the shift.
Rocker gaskets buy genuine as eBay ones leak. Put a pea of rtv in the cam mound corners

Haven't checked this thread sorry guys. Thank you for your input :D

I got it cheap with need of the front bumper/splitter being attended to and a clutch doing (in the process of doing this now.. only working 5.30 - 930pm after real life haha. Planned to finish it saturday morning.. only just removing the exhaust.

Thanks for the recommendation, i'll get the rev 3 and see if I like it. and yeah I always use RTV on my cam gaskets :)

The colour i'm going to be going to is my favourite MR2 colour (and i don't usually like red) Super Red... I can't wait. I can spray fairly well and have a booth so hopefully it comes out really good :D

I've always wanted an MR2. I decided I was getting one when the perfect deal came up. This is a nice import one, regular services and passed every MOT (i've seen the history) all advisory's were taken care of too. 180k KM... A bit high but the engine is getting swapped anyway when I recoop my £££
