MR2 Turbo Cold engine restricts power

Hi guys,

So, obviously I don't use the full, well even half, of the potential of the car until the water temperature shows the optimum temperature. However, oil temperature takes a few minutes longer to warm up, and the car still underboosts until this is warm.

So does the ECU of the car actually restrict the boost of the car until the oil temperature and everything else is nice and toasty?

I know this can be seen as nooby, and over time of owning the car I have realised this, but is the car actually this clever?

P.S it's also quite annoying when you work/live close to a B road so not being able fully boost until a few minutes on said B road is quite annoying

Oil takes a very long time to warm up, could be even 30 min or so

The ECU does control the power under the control of the ECU water temp sensor, not the same one as the gauge sensor.

If you think you have a problem replace the ECU water temp sensor with a new one from Toyota.

Thanks for your response.

The bloke I bought it off has said he's just replaced the water temp sensor, so I think the sensor is all good.

I don't think there's actually an issue, I just think it prolongs warming up because I have unplugged the fan engine bay temp sensor so it's always running.

it wont boost until its over a quarter on the temp gauge and should run at half way on the gauge all day

Yeah it won't (and I wouldnt test it anyway) boost before quarter, and it most definitely opens up and stays at half way all day!

I love it when the car warms and wakes up! It's like driving two different cars!

The car will boost when cold.
Your just restricted to actuator pressure until the ecu is happy.

When it's happy it'll open the tvsv value (standard boost controller) that sits under the inlet manifold and allow for the extra 3-4psi. Basically is bleeding pressure away from the actuator when it's happy.


Soon as you fit an aftermarket controller you need to disable this feature, so need to be extra careful the car is warm before boosting.
