Ecu question????

Post by chambers360 »

School boy error! Flat battery... Jump leads on the wrong terminals.... Few sparks lots of smoke.... Yer you get the idea,

The garage i took it to says worst case scenario is the ecu being fried...
So if that is the case my question is how complicated is fixing this? Is it just a case of getting another rev 3 ecu and plug and play?

There are plenty of boxes that could be fried... but they should all be plug and play against a similar car. You don't give any more details about your car so it's difficult to advise further. Imports have a different ECU to UK cars and then there's manual / automatic to consider... and that assumes your car isn't a turbo. So that's at least 5 potential ECUs for a "rev3". Only the right one is guaranteed to be plug and play.

Hopefully the car battery took the magor hit .. move from the bat out wards checking relays and fusees mate .. last up the ecu ... easy to buy on ebay for £100 :thumleft:

Thought you had a tubby .. much cheaper for a n/a ecu ..

Best of luck mate :thumleft:

There seems to be some info missing here, i'm assuming your car no longer starts or something?

You state what happened then the next thing is its a a garage for some reason?

I did the same myself last year on my calibra turbo, assumed the worst but was fine once I fitted a new battery.

See thats what i thought the mr2's battery should have beard the brunt of the reversal of the voltage ..hopefully new battery and you'll be good to go :thumleft:

Sorry should have gave more info really, theres a 120a fuse blown in the front, i bridged that with copper wire and the car starts and runs if its connected to another car or battery pack, but as soon as the jump leads get taken off it dies, so its either an alternator problem or battery, likely not going to be ecu in all honestly, but on top of that i have no electrics, no electric windows no dash lights no fan nothing electrical is working even when its connected to another battery

Possibly another fuse blown somewhere :-k

Have you tried charging the battery, then trying to start the car, see if it still runs without the jump leads ?

Only put a small charge (1 hour) in the battery to help with fault finding, a fully charged battery could keep the car running for too long and make you think things are fine when they aren't.

Someone else did this (jump leads the wrong way round) a few months back try a search of the forum to see what comes up, their experience may help... :thumleft:

Like i said before .. you are going to have to test fuses (use continuity check on a multi meter) good news the ecu is ok .. silly mistake but from the sounds of it shouldnt cost you to much .. a few fuses with luck :thumleft:
