Slight boost hesitation Rev 3

Post by CalMac »

Went for a drive last night having put £35 of V Power in. Everything was great until about 40 minutes in when I noticed that boost would start to come on as usual at about 3k, but then hesitated slightly and once over 4k pulled hard as normal with no hiccups.

Having read up last night it is likely to be the knock sensor telling the ECU to retard timing slightly, which may be a result of several factors.

My first thought was that maybe it was a 'bad batch' of fuel, as I've never had any kind of hesitations before and that was the only parameter which has changed recently. If this is the case should I just go through this tank of fuel and then fill her up again and see if the problem persists?

I'm running NGK Grade 7 Iridium plugs, Greddy SMIC, PP Departure exhaust w/Berk DP at 1.1bar and this is the first mechanical issue I've had!

Only other thought is that maybe the clutch is slipping, although I thought this might be more apparent in the higher revs. Also it's an uprated clutch so less likely.

Also due a coolant change - although not overheating at all the pipes are all gurgling behind me once the car is turned off after a hard drive  Not sure if this could affect detonation, especially if temp. is still reading as normal.

*Also standard BOV, plugs were changed two weeks ago and all came in at around 0.7mm/0.8mm gap.

I'll have a dig around to see if I can find damaged vac hoses etc. but otherwise I'm thinking knock as the ignition components have been faultless up until now!

Before you start getting into anything serious, check your HT leads are securely on. Also how old are they?

Boost leak is pretty common .. turbos pushing harder to make boost .. temps rise .. timings retarded ..

Just a thought mate 8-[

Ok I'll check the leads tomorrow but they should be ok, only did the spark plugs a couple of weeks ago so they shouldn't have worked loose but I've got a spare set I could try.

Is there a method of checking for boost leaks, or is it literally just dig around the bay and listen for whistling? I've got a Blitz Dual SBC fitted if that could help diagnose.

Sorted! The rubber vacuum hose for the SBC running next to the timing cover had a split. I've bodged it with insulation tape for now and order some new vacuum hose :)

My SBC was reading 0.3bar at full boost although it still felt strong so that helped to find the issue!
