Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
Going to look at an MR2 Turbo which is Rev2 but has had an engine swap 2 years ago... The current owner bought it shortly after the engine transplant and has covered 4000 miles on the replacement engine.
The question is how do I tell what Revision the engine is from?
Thanks (before anyone says... I have asked the owner who is unsure but is going away to see what he has in his paperwork that came with the car)
Google Rev 3 turbo engine images and Rev 2 turbo engine images. Save both pics to your phone and compare to the car when you look at it.
For info, Rev 1 & 2 turbo engines will have "ceramics power twin entry turbo" on the inlet manifold. Rev 3 turbo will have a sticker in same place "2000 twin entry turbo"
Go by google images though, the engines are clearly different in appearance
Here's a link which may help: Photos of engine bays for rev 1 - 3
There may be other better ways to identify which rev engine has been fitted, but in stock form the rev 1 and rev2 turbos have a MAF (look for large multipin flat plug connected to it) between the air filter and the turbo. The rev 3+ doesn't.
I think the rev 1 only has a single small bore vac pipe between the top of the throttle body and the charcoal canister, the rev 2 has two vac pipes between the top of the throttle body and the charcoal canister.
The rev 3 comes with a large black oil catch on the nearside of the throttle body. On the rev 1 and 2 the vent pipe simply goes straight back into the air intake (unless someone has fitted an after market oil catch can).
You could also check the part number stamped into the top of the throttle body. For a rev 2 the top number should I think be 74760. You could also check the ECU. If the part number is in red, it should be a rev 1 or rev 2 ECU. If it's in black that should be a rev 3+ ECU.
The unknown is of course how well the swap was done if the engine comes from a different rev.

Cheers I have a pic he has sent me so that confirms it is either rev1 or 2.
He says the engine is from a newer model with a stronger head, could it be that is the same rev engine just with a newer rev head?
Cheers
its extremely unlikely there has been a head swap.
there is alot involved with that swap on a rev1/2 block.
if the engine looks like a rev1/2, then it clearly has a rev1/2 head on it, and so not from a newer car.
sounds like he's just trying to big up the car.
The later models used a "stronger" head gasket which you can fit to a rev 2 to improve reliability if you intend increasing stock boost levels. So giving the seller the benefit of the doubt, it could be that he was told by the previous owner that the later head gasket had been fitted when the engine was changed, and the current owner has muddled things up in his mind.
Who knows, it's all speculation without any paperwork to prove what work has actually been done.
I'd have a good look through what paperwork he has to see if that clears things up.
