Engine management light comes on when boosting

Post by Wisey91 »

Hi all,
So I've just completed the run in on my engine and have turned the boost back up to what it was before. I was running 0.8 on low and 1.1-1.2 on high. Anyways now when in high boost when it gets to pressure the engine management light comes on and it cuts the power to the car. Is this the engine detecting knock and going into limp mode? I have turned the boost to 1 bar on high and that seems to have stopped this but it is less than ideal knowing that it can happen at any time I choose to go into boost! It doesn't violently lose power or anything so don't think it would be fuel cut? But tbh I have no idea.
Any suggestions on what this could be?
Thanks,
Rik

Have you checked for error codes? 34 is over boost.

Sounds like you're hitting the fuel cut limit, do you have an FCD fitted?

So I've ran the error codes on my 2 and was a bit disappointed when it came up with the knock sensor error code. The engine management light now sometimes comes on when in low boost too. I presume this isn't good? Can anyone shed some light on this please? I'm hoping this wasn't a dodgy rebuild!
Cheers, Rik

More likely a dodgy sensor. Replace the sensor then take it for a drive :thumleft:

I was thinking maybe a popped capacitor in the ecu 8-[ .. happened to my rev 2 ecu .

Thanks guys. If I get a new sensor and still have the problem would my next best bet be to check the timing checked out? Are the capacitors in the ecu changeable or does it mean I would need a new ecu?

You need to check your timing. Base and cam timing.

You really shouldn't be blowing knock sensors at 1bar of boost.

Either too much timing. Your using crappy fuel, or the build hasn't been carried out to spec.

Duff ecus do all sorts of things. Namely misfiring from what I hear. But enough to blow a knock sensor I'm not sure.

I will get timing checked before buying anything I think. As for crappy fuel she is always run on shell v power and nothing else. The rebuild on the other hand...I won't get into it but I almost lost the engine, which is what worries me about the current hiccups with the car.

Had a dodgy knock sensor on a rev3 and it was really nerfing the power. Would sometimes get the engine warning light. Reset the ecu and if the warning keeps coming back check the timing isn't too advanced, then if still no good try replacing the knock sensor.
Rev1 Tubby, Garrett GT3071R, Motec M4 EMS, 880cc delphis, Rev3 turbo port polished built head/cams/titanium retainers, shim under buckets, HD springs, etc., rear bumper mounted intercooler, and vanilla air freshener.

It sounds as if there is some kind of knocking coming from the engine. Oil pressure light stays on for around 5 seconds once turned on and it sounds like it's knocking badly until it goes out. Once it goes out can still hear a slight tap. The car may be a write off now anyways as got hit up the rear on Wednesday.
