Engine check light permantly

Post by niffhwluap »

Hi chaps,

I've got a 1991 Jap spec MK2 MR2 non turbo which has started running rough and the engine check light has come on permantly, I've tried checking for codes but the light is just staying on, not flashing.

Also I've noticed a whirring noise coming from the front somewhere after the engine is started which seems to get slower and slower until the noise stops.

Any one got any ideas?

Are you checking for code correctly.

The engine check light should not be on permenantly with the engine off. You don't have the engine running when checking for codes.

No the engine is not running when trying to check for codes, the engine light is on all of the time when the engine is running.

That is very strange. So ignition off with the TE1 and E1 bridged. It just stays on perm in the second position.

That would be lead me to believe failing ECU.

The noise from the front is normal it is PS unit.

Stays on perm with the engine running and non running with TE1/E1 bridged yes.

Before condeming the ecu id trace the te1 wire back to the ecu and earth it there, it's possible the pins in the diagnostic connector are corroded

As its a 1991 i would also suspect it could be afm.
When my afm failed it caused the ecu to not show any faults.

Maybe worth unplugging the afm and redoing the test.

More than likely is the ecu though. Pop the lid off it and look for blown capacitors. The goo leaks over the pcb and corrodes the tracks. Very common problem.

It won't have an AFM.
