Advice Please - Rev1 Timing Markings?

Post by IMR2T »

Hi guys, my Rev1 Turbo chewed its timing belt and I'm trying to line up my crank pulley and can pulleys.

There's no obvious markings, what do I line them up with before putting my new timing belt on?

Any input is appreciated.

The markings are onthe engine.

Crank pulley at TDC

Cam pulleys each have a hole in one spoke. Line up the tooth adjacent to the hole with the indent in the backplate.

That's great cheers mate!

Is the crank at tdc 12 o'clock as I look at it or 12 o'clock relative to the engine angle leaning to the left?

The crank is at TDC when the mark on the pulley lines up with 0 degree pointer on the timing cover.

Ok, there's a square edged notch on the crank pulley that a big washer on fits one way over, is that what lines up with the crank case mark yeah?

Will I line the middle of the notch or right hand leading corner of the notch?

Middle. It should only be about 1-2mm wide.

Excellent mate, thank you.

One last question, I'm swapping the water pump, I've taken out 4 bolts, there seems to be a star screw located on the top right corner, is this stopping the pump from coming off?

Water pump assembly is secured to the engine by 3 main bolts into the block, possibly another into the backplate (depending on revision), and two nuts at the rear.

If you've bought just an aftermarket water pump, as opposed to a complete water pump assembly from Toyota, you'll need to remove that Philips bolt when you've removed the assembly.

Chances of removing the Philips bolt is slim. It's loctited in, and the head normally strips.

Always better to buy a complete, ready built assembly from Toyota.

Yeah, I've just got an aftermarket pump.

Noticed the screw head was stripping. What a pain in the ass!

Is there a guide to removing the water pump assembly?

Going to crack on with it tomorrow morning, if that's simple I'll be happy.

But tbh nothing's been simple so far...

Most jobs won't be on a 25 year old car that has had little routine maintenance.
