Locking wheel nuts

Post by Heliwilly »

Just about to change the calipers on my wife's 1999 MR2 Mk2, and I have come across a problem, of my own making. I have misplaced the unlocking device that fits over the lock-nut. Apart from whacking a deep socket over the lock-nut and unwinding it with a wrecker bar, has anyone got any other methods??. The trouble is that the outside of the nut is circular with a design machined into the well in the nut to suit the unlocking tool, that I haven't got. The wheels are aftermarket Allesio alloys that were on the car when it was bought a few years ago.

Sounds like Mgard locking wheel nuts if the outer diameter is chrome like the imprint then it is a solid nut and deep socket method might work, however if they are Mgard Ultra's where the outer diameter is slightly barrel shaped and not chrome like the imprint then the outer diameter is designed to revolve under torque so the deep socket idea may not work.
Halfords stock these wheel nuts if they are indeed Mgard ask their opinion first perhaps.
Could slacken the four normal nuts slightly and edge forwards and backwards to hopefully release the torque seal on the nut in question before the power bar method.
Good luck.

The outside of the locking nut is chrome and circular. Not sure where they originated from though. Might give Halfords a look tomorrow. Cheers.

Sounds promising for the solid type and deep multi fluted socket method but check with Halfords first.

Sorted!!! The local Tyremen tyre fitters did them for £25. They were McGard type lock nuts. A 21mm socket and a big hammer. Sorted in 15 mins. Took longer to get the nut out of the socket after they had removed it than to hammer the socket on and remove it.
