Rev 2 turbo cold start issue

Post by danjama »

Hi all, this isn't in my car but one I'm looking at buying.

Seller has said that on really cold days, the car will start no probs but if you touch the throttle quickly within 30 seconds it will try to stal, almost like when there's moisture in the ignition system.

However, let it idle for 30 seconds plus and it's fine.

What could this be? Unfortunately when I viewed it was a warm afternoon and started and ran with no issues. He suspects the idle control valve.

Thanks for all suggestions!!

I'm assuming the car is equiped with a 5th injector for cold start!? If so the injector fires for approximately 30 seconds until the temperature sensor (cold start injector time switch) shuts it off. During this time the motor is in an over-rich state. opening the throttle richens the mixture even further causing stumble.

So what could be the issue? The injector or the sensor? My current Rev 2 turbo has never had this problem.

There is no issue as far as I know...I think mine did it too.

Oh really? So basically just let it idle a bit until the switch goes. I'm guessing it only happens in the cold because the denser air makes it run more rich than usual?

So how is the ECU measuring air density? Answer - it can't, so air density has nothing to do with it.

Check for fault codes
Check CSS is working
Check ISC is working (remove, clean and refit)

Toyota would not put a car on the market that stalls when you touch the throttle.
