Is a head gasket a big deal or nowt to worry about on a mr2 tubby

Post by masterbateson »

As the title say, Is a head gasket a big deal or nowt to worry about on a mr2 tubby???? :?: :?: :?:

On the MGTF forum headgaskets are a common enquiry, and a lot of people who are not clued up on the K series engine think its the kiss of death or a 1000pound plus job.

However, us in the know about k series know its more often than not no biggy, which can be fixed by the forum mobile mechanics for 300quid including all parts right on your drive way! and cheaper still if your prepared to get your own hands dirty.

So whats the scoop with MR2's? is it generally just a change of gasket and a good flush through and new oil and fluids and maybe a skim.
Or is it the blow of death?

Also can you do this through the top lid without the need to drop the engine?

Ta,
Me :clown:

What revision?

Depends why the head gasket has gone, if it's overheated then the head may have warped and gone soft. The block would also need checking for cracks.

Best case scenario just the head gasket needs changing, worse case scenario the block and head are scrap.

Also to note the rev1/2 doesnt use a MLS gasket which is more prone to going.

Head gasket failures are rare in revision 3 turbos and symptoms usualy indicate something a bit more serious.

Well looks like i wont have that problem as i appear to have bought another car today

Anyone previously owned this one or been to view it?

But looks like my new problem will be broken studs on the exhaust manifold, can these easily or with a bit of swearing and grazed knuckles?

Or should i just make my excuses and walk away?

Bid it at a grand so thought cant go to wrong, he has though on a phone call mentioned a hole/problem with the cill at jacking point that wasnt mentioned on the listing.
