Battery Light on

Post by Zeppozen »

Last alternator seized and eventually gave up.
Got newish one clean and hardly used.
Could not get mount bolt to come off.
Garage eventually had to grind up old alternator to get it off and out. £200
So newish alternator been on car for 3 months.
Left car for 4 days other week
started car smoke and screeching ...Alternator seized fan belt snapped.
WD40 and Grips freed Alternator so turn by hand. New alternator belt fitted.
All well for 1 week
Drive Home today in dark then ......Batt light on and Charge dial dropped.

Any suggestions ?

Totally lost faith in these cars. Its barely worth £500 yet parts are more expensive than car ( £170 for recon alternator plus £100+ for fitting as they are impossible to remove)

It sounds like the replacement alt is a pup. if you had to free it off its gonna seize again. Very common problem as the water collects on top of them through the vents in the engine hood. I think you just been unlucky with the replacement part. New alt or recon one and new belt should do the trick. Worth checking the fuse too.

It's also worth considering fitting a s/h turbo engine lid as these generally offer better rain protection than the na lid.

Thanks

I removed alternator ( much easier now all the bolts were new and no "Grinder " needed. Then off to local auto electric guys.A diode and the reg pack were shot.

They only charge £2 for check. Munros of Galashiels if anyone in the area.

The alternator looked like new even when i took the cover off. so just shows you can never tell.

Fuse first part I checked.

I made deflector plates and cover plates for lid with vent holes as i was getting misfire with water pishing down on plug leads !!
[ What engineer gets a salary for designing an engine cover where water is pishing onto the electrics ??? ](*,) ]

But lads at garage removed them during MOT and never got round to replacing them.

Anyhoo, another second hand one on the way so gambling on it , but just cant justify £150 for new one as car only worth twice that if at all.

Thanks for the help. I will strip it right down and maybe purchase a new rectifier and diodes and see why it seized. ( I know the rotor and stator rust together if left for a while but not 4 days !!)
