That's literally what the guy did in CFD, and the results just showed an increase in drag:

MR2 stock. Rev 5 wing. Drag force 238 N. Lift force 95 N.
MR2 with raised stock rear wing. Drag force 255 N. Lift force 95 N

Did the guy look at BGWs?? Yes, of course he did!

So they both add drag... I'm not sure what's so special about the second wing, cos it seems to do a very good job compared to either the raised spoiler or the first big wing. I guess that's the thing... you probably need a different shape to be of use up high compared to closer to the body. So the rev5 wing is clearly of benefit low down, but the shape isn't as effective further up...

Indeed! Far too many times enthusiasts modify something assuming stock sucks, when in fact it's often better than what they replace it with :thumleft:

That said, back to the original topic, I could never go spoilerless because, IMHO, the SW20 just looks so incomplete without one!

I could be wrong but I think the second wing there is generating downforce because it's wider than the roof. I know that if you have a BGW the most effective portions are the outermost extremities.

also, see the wee flat parts on the ends?? these are used on aircraft to reduce drag and increase lift so the wings can be shorter :thumleft:
If a spoiler isn't the same shape as a wing (albeit upside down) it will do nothing.

A lot of these big spoilers are just lumps of metal.
