Reset Mileometer?

Post by Ryan S »

Ok, so planning on fitting a rebuilt engine to the car. Is it fair to reset the mileometer to zero? Or just take note of when the new engine was fitted? Personally i'd rather reset it. It'll all be documented (probably just on here to be honest). I don't plan on selling the car and if i did i'd obviously tell any buyers. What's people preference on this? The car is an import and has had a couple of documented clock changes already.

I'd leave it as is if I was you and make a note of it as to when new engine went in: date / mileage.

Also will look dodgy on your MOT when you see previous mileages higher then going back to zero

I'm not too worried about it looking dodgy, the history looks well dodgy already with the clock change already, i do have a reciept from rougue for it though. Yeah think i might just leave it, shows the total mileage of the chassis i guess, would be nice to have a zero mile engine with zero mile clocks though :)

leave it as it is, note the date/miles when the engine was rebuilt - which will obviously be backed up by receipts etc. the odometer indicates miles the car has done, not just the engine

also, being pedantic, it's a rebuilt engine, not a zero mile engine.. the block, head (casting, at least), crank etc are still used items

You can't justify a couple of new items over the 1000s of used/old already on the car to put it to zero.

Yes pistons/turbo etc may have 0 miles. But most of the components of the engine will still be old/used even if cleaned up let alone the rest of the car!

Bare shell rebuild with all brand new parts you could warrant it.
Deep pockets for that :thumleft:

I did think about this, not strictly new parts i mean. Ach yeah i'll just leave it and document the mileage. It's on just 100,000 now :(

From a potential future buyer point of view, a car with a tampered with mileage for whatever reason is always going to raise flags.

If it's purely for your benefit, put a bit of tape over the 1st digit as it's just hit 100k \:D/

see i'm not too worried about potential buyers point of view, if i ever did sell it it'd be a long long time away, by that time the car will be too lod to care about the mileage, also, as i said the mileage would be well documented, the MOTs already have a huge "blip" where the clocks were changed.

I'll most likely just leave it anyway. or figure out the true mileage as best i can and change it to that :thumleft:

Ive been using an android gps mph app for my speedo on my phone as i havent sorted my normal clocks out yet.

Ive liked it and been thinking of using a cheap chinese tablet with android and doing a digital dash but one thing holding me back is the mileometer thing. Obviously if im using a digital speedo it wont clock the original mileage.

What do people do with digitial dashs?

you can surely just set a digital dash to show whatever mileage you want?? failing that send it in the post on a few round the world trips :)
