Surprised to hear you say that Peter, one of the uniform pieces of running advice I've been given is to snap the throttle shut at the top of your chosen rev range and let the engine run down the revs with no throttle applied :-k

I think he might mean not to use the gears to slow down? :-k ie. rev-matching

Correct. Poor phrasing on my part.

High engine vacuums as well as high pressures are both needed for good ring sealing.

Most oils that state 'fully synthetic' aren't really fully synth anyway!

Really?

There are strict rules regarding describing a lubricant as "fully synthetic".

Can you give us an example or two?

Think he means they are not ester based or PAO based. Poor phrasing on his part, I think?

This just for the first 1000 miles?

Most important running-in period is first few hundred miles. Consider it done at 500 miles.

Steve won't need to worry about run in. I will run the rings in on a runway, done in an afternoon. Of course mineral oil, I usually change it way more than necessary. I'll change even after the first prime of the engine. The 1000 mile malarky I reckon is a way for builders to get out of warrantee. Completely OTT.

Sounds like a good way to do it. Millers Running in oil is meant to be dropped at 300 miles so they obviously think 1000 is ott.

So literally spin the oil pump up then drop the oil straight away?

Remember the advert "never a dry start" thats because there is a brown gunge covering the internals i am informed by a local engine builder.

Really? So there's more additives in the oil that's no good for it?

Toyota oil - think I'll stick to that then. Can't argue with manufacturer spec.
