turbo - castrol GTX 10w/40 users?

Post by androo007 »

Hi chaps

Have been using castrol magnatec 10w/40 in my rev 3 turbo but at tesco they are selling it half price ...... £6 for 2 litres - bargain!

Before I go and snap a load up, is it considered a poor / unwise oil choice?

Cheers

You should be using a fully synthetic oil, magnatec is part synth. :-k

You can get fully synthetic Castrol Edge for £30-35/4L from eurocarparts, not sure why you'd wanna use Castrol GTX...

Because

A) Toyota specified oil is 10w/40
B) 2 MR2 specialists have both recommended semi 10w/40
C) £12 for 4 litres is less than £35.

The engine was designed in the 80's - semi synth let alone fully wasn't even around then - so in my eyes I don't quite see the point. I don't rag the car, its standard (pretty much) and never sees a track or strip. I change the oil every 2-3k miles, which in my opinion is the most important factor here.

Well if it helps I use Mobil 1 10w-40 and have been using since I got my turbo in '08. I do change my oil every 4 months though.

I prefer to change my oil more than keep full synthetic and keep it for a year.

I am however getting my car back after an engine forged rebuild, so unsure on a higher powered engine.

Semi is fine, just change it more frequently like many others do.

You probably already know. Be sure it gets running in oil (for beddings engine in) and no ya mobile 1 stuff until later!

How long must I bed the engine? 1000 miles? Luke is running in the engine before giving it to me.

Where's Luke going to find the time to bed the engine in for 1000miles? You could be waiting a long while.

Some say it's bed in after 20mins of running, some say 100miles, some 500, or 1000. 80% is probably bed in within first few miles IMO.
I imagine luke won't be going anywhere near 1000miles for sure.
I'm sure has been discussed before and he mentioned putting it under load and boost straight away which IMO is the way to go. Not too much revs and low boost mind you. I would go at least 500miles, 5k rev limit and like 10psi with 2/3 oil/filter changes of running in oil.
Everyone has there own way though for mileage, as long as load and boost is used. None of this keep it below 3k rpm and no boost nonsense, you won't bed in anything that way.

Most oils that state 'fully synthetic' aren't really fully synth anyway!

From my experience a magnetic sump plug also did it's job on a rebuilt engine.

Cool - But my main question was for the rear ester geeks among us - the actual quality of the oil GTX vs Magnantec - is it bad? Has anyone else used it?

I mean, to be honest I'm flapping about nothing. Halfords oil is just Comma - and lots of people use that. I change it v regulary with genuine Mr T filters, so I should be OK.

For you bargain hunters out there then - get to tesco!

Never work the engine hard until it's warmed up.

Do not drive on the motorway for the first 200 miles. Drive on A roads, overtake cars as normal and have fun.

Drive on A roads if possible for the first 600 miles. Check the oil!

Everyone has their own thoughts on running in.

If new rings have been fitted they need to bed in with the freshly honed bores.

So ordinary mineral oil only - no synthetic, semi-synthetic etc.

Drive it normally, using plenty of boost but limit revs to 5000rpm. Don't cruise at same rpm and don't use engine for braking.

Then change oil for synthetic and filer aty 500 miles.

And after 500-1000 miles? Do I have to stick to full synthetic? I prefer to change oil more often

Why not use engine braking, pretty much everything I have ever read about running in an engine says engine braking is beneficial....

Surprised to hear you say that Peter, one of the uniform pieces of running advice I've been given is to snap the throttle shut at the top of your chosen rev range and let the engine run down the revs with no throttle applied :-k
