MR2 Newb

Post by MR2 Livvy »

I've just bought an MR2, its a 1993 K reg in a vibrant orange. I wouldn't mind posting a few pictures and questions to help me get it on the road.

First of all what revision is it? I'm thinking Rev 2.

The subframe is shot! so I'm going to replace it, what are the bars at the back called? They look pretty corroded and should probably be done with the frame.

Welcome :thumleft:

You need 15posts made before posting pics.
The only way to tell what rev it originally is, is by using the chassis number.. Its easy to mod a car to make it look newer/older but if it is a true k-reg it should be a rev2.

Get posting and get some pics up

Most likely a rev2 but it could be a rev3 depending on exactly wen it was registered, easy way to tell is by the rear spoiler, if its in sections and extends onto the rear quarter panels, it's a rev2, if it's 1 piece, its a rev3. Of course it could have been changed etc....

I put a rev2 spoiler on my old rev3.

Evidence that body panels mean nothing. Chassis number is key, all parts are interchangeable.

1993 could be a rev2 or rev3 as mentioned.

Welcome to the club.

My L reg was a Rev 2, (registerd 01/01/94) so would be pretty certain it will be a Rev2.

Is there a way to check that? Mine is 1993 rev3 but can't work out the first registered date.

Dvla Vehicle check will give you the date first registered.

Although Rev3s came out in Japan 11/93, so yours may well be a rev3. I could be wrong but they were only available in UK from spring 94.

I remember going to Toyota `New model` day in Hertfordshire in spring 94 and test driving a Goodwood Green L Reg Rev3 that had just been released, and thinking I preferred my rev2 :)

Probably a rev 2

Easy enough to find a second hand sub frame, take a look in the breaking section:

Or stick a wanted post up:
http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewforum.php?f=15

I'm guessing you are talking about the rear tie bars (the ones that are on the rear of the subframe and connect to the arm rear arm on the hubs)? They unbolt from the frame so can be down separately, and again- finding a second hand pair shouldn't be too much bother.

If you're struggling give Trevor a call at TCB- he normally holds salvage stock of stuff like that and is super reliable:

Dont use Dvla, mines is first registered with them in '98 which would make it a rev5 but its actually a rev3

I wouldn't bother to be honest mate, standard mani and b-pipe are fine for the NA, plenty of other areas to spend your cash first :thumleft:

The old system is rusted through apart from the manifold & its working out cheaper to go stainless from the manifold back rather than replace odd bits of system

If you do decide to buy it make sure you confirm with the seller that it will definately fit your engine.
I was looking at a kit from the same seller a few weeks ago & they told me it wouldn't fit a 3SGE regardless of what the listing claimed.

Same story just told me it doesn't fit, I've replied letting him know of his mistake and how confusing it could be to buyers (not in those precise words  )

DECAT

Post by MR2 Livvy »

Exhaust DECAT

I've seen loads of decat pipes on ebay and loads of decat systems including the mongoose one and was wondering given that the cat requirement date is Aug 1992 (and many are for 1993 onwards cars) why are so many of these being sold and are they passing MOT emissions? The reason I ask is because it seems to be far easier to buy a S/S exhaust with a Decat already in place than one without.

They aren't passing MOT.. You have to put a CAT on come MOT time.

There is a loop hole with the import MR2 turbo where you can not have a CAT up to 1995 due to there being no exact match in the VOSA database
