Injector stuck open on new build engine

Post by bolton »

Hi all

Currently running in a new forged engine. Have covered 240miles so far!
Running in map by ryan g!
Right out in her today and all of a sudden major miss fire and then cut out completely so coasted to a stop! Also attempted 3 starts of engine to be greeted with black smoke and fuel vapour out the exhaust!!!

Turns out to be injector 2 stuck open (1000cc delphis)
How much damage would this have done to the bore (bore wash)? Misfired for 5 seconds at about 4000rpm and then the 3 attempted starts?

I then towed the car home and cracked my bumper! Lol!
Nightmare day!
Thanks all

Leave the plug out so the vapours can dry and change the oil. Should be OK. I might be tempted to put a tiny amount of oil down the plug hole and crank it over with the plug out (and leads off obv) just to lube up the upper cylinder wall / top rings.

Yeah i hope it will be ok, i have a friend coming out with an inspection camera to double check.

Can you get injectors rebuilt? Although i think this one may be too far gone?
And if i change it to a new injector will i need to check the map?
How reliable are these delphi's?

Cheers

As far as I'm aware you can only have injectors cleaned, not repaired.

Do a compression test across the cylinders, that should give you an idea as to whether you have done anything long lasting to cylinder No.2.

Borescope is great idea, and like Ryan says- change your oil before you run it again. FWIW I reckon you'll be ok, the cylinder wall shouldn't have glazed that quickly.

Sounds like it's either worth getting all four injectors flow tested, or swapping out for a fresh set. The map should be ok as it's only for running in so should be extremely conservative...if it was a final, all out map then I'd consider a quick check over.

I reckon you'll be ok, but I'd be doing exactly the same thing as you: trying my best to confirm.

Yeah changed oil as soon as i got it home!
So i should get one new injector then get all 4 flow tested?

I'd get all four checked- if one's failing, then there's a risk the others may follow suit shortly- you need to know if it's failed, or just stuck open cos of dirt/ debris in it.

Might be worth changing your fuel filter as well (if it hasn't been done for a while) :-k

Yeah ill order a new fuel filter! They were brand new injectors with only 240 miles on them. Does seem strange! But like you say worth getting them checked out!

Could just be dirt in your fuel lines from assembly?

OK.

Are they genuine Delphi injectors? We had a set of fake paddy field SARD 800s give us a load of issues til we realised they were not genuine.

That's why i asked. Injectors are normally highly reliable.

It sounds like dirt in the fuel line that has jammed the injector open, what filter and fuel lines are you using?

Using a walbro 255, 1000cc top feeds (racer x top feed kit), -6AN Redhorse performance fittings, standard toyota fuel filter, braided lines.
Also uprated the fuel pump wiring, removed relay and resistor.

My money's on debris from assembly- maybe a bit of outer braid or something, it's just taken a while to work it's way into an injector and then got itself wedged in there.

Your plan remains the same in my eyes- pull all four injectors and get them inspected by a pro, if it's jammed open they should be able to clear it and capture the debris to give you a clue as to where it came from.

If it is debris, then I would be pulling all the lines down stream of the filter, and the rail and regulator, and cleaning them all very carefully.
