Greetings from Málaga (South of Spain) - Pics updated

Post by sky-net »

Hi!

I'm a happy and proud owner of a very early JDM MR2 GT (Turbo '90) with ceramic CT26, e154 gearbox + LSD (SW20-0000702)

I bought this car two years ago to a couple of english residents here at "Costa del Sol" (a very touristic place)

This car was imported from Japan to England... and then to Spain

I've done a few mods to my tubby:

- BC Racing coilovers
- EMS Powered intercooler kit (wrinkle black powdercoated pipes)
- KO Racing downpipe
- K&N stock replacement air filter
- NGK Iridium Sparks + wire set
- Prothane bushings
- Gearbox (base and cable) metallic bushings
- 280mm Momo Team steering wheel

and several maintenance and servicing parts:

- timing belt (2 times) I had a little oil leak from crankshaft that made me change the timing belt for second time. (tensors and waterpump only 1 time)
- new clutch (stock... aisin clutch)
- New a/c condenser + compressor (converted to r134a)
- all filters and fluids

It has been running with Motul 300v 10w40, 8100 X-cess 5-40w and will be on Millers CFS 10w40 for next week

Some stuff i've got:

- EMS Powered SMIC

- KO Racing downpipe

My short term planned mods:
- Install a carbon fiber hood i own (Type B style)
- EBC rotors with redstuff pads
- Speed Zone engine mounts (front and rear)

For medium/long term, i'd like to buy a full body kit (Type B)... As soon as my near bankruptcy account allows me to do that

Happy new year!

Thank you a lot guys. This forum is really helpful, as there aren't a lot of owners of this car at Spain... There's no information to look for at spanish forums. My english skills are improing as well!!

Yes... It's a very early unit (september 1990)... In really good shape! 68k kms (at Japan) + 22k miles (at UK and here).

Some of the roads in southern spain were fantastic, I remember driving up to ronda wishing I was in my 2 not thrashing the balls off a focus rental car.

How hard is it to keep it running over there? I thought that spain was a bit harder to own a modified car due to yearly inspections being a bit harder to pass with mods?

You are right. It's really difficult to own a modified car in Spain due to extremely restrictive laws. It seems that they try to push you to buy a new car instead having an old one.

- Decat? Forbidden if your car has been built since 1994
- Coilovers? Forbidden... But you can legalice them as i did (paying... of course)
- Bigger IC? Forbidden (i picked my pipes powdercoated in wrinkle black.. as i wanted to have an almost stock ic style)
- Forged? No way
- Body kit? Yes if you pay
- Bigger brakes? Yes if you pay a bit more...

And what about running at high speeds? 15 years ago it was possible... but today it's almost an impossible task (bunch of radars everywhere)

Near to Ronda there are very interesting roads... and you can find Ascari's circuit too. I remember i had the chance to bring my recently bought tubby there two years ago with no mods, hardened tyres, rusty bushes and bouncing suspension... Horsepower was just fine... but everything else... just failed! (Ascari is an high speed track... and you need to have a really healthy and prepared setup)
After a 15 minutes stint, my car came back to boxes with white smoke coming out from the four brakes!... It seemed like the old Delorean from Back to future Movie... but the car raced quite decently against much bigger and heavily modded cars.

Who knows... Maybe one day this tubby will come back with more bases covered to race hard

Cheers!
