WARNING LIGHTS

Post by Baker »

started car tonight and went to the shops, all was fine. got back to the car started her up and all the lights stayed on.

yellow oil light, water light, and an exclamation mark light (!) and also the battery light. the battery meter was reading half way too.

checked oil, fine, water was fine, and thought it might be a belt snapped, again that was ok.

they stayed on for a bit after driving a few miles, so revved the engine hard a few times and the lights disappeared with the battery meter going back to normal.

my first guess was a knackered alternator, or maybe it is sticking?? any help appreciated thanks.....

I had similar symptoms when my alternator went (I'm on my 3rd in a year!), if it's knackered and you keep driving eventually the battery will go flat and you'll start to lose the use of your headlights, stereo etc until eventually the car cuts out and stalls.

If it's an intermitent problem you could go on for quite a while before it packs in completely....but it will inevitably happen about 30 miles from home when it's cold and p1$$ing with rain so it might be worth getting it checked out now.

Well what you described about the lights is the alternator, but you recon it went back to normal after revving a bit, may be a bad connection, probs best thing to do is disconnect it and have a clean about the connections and maybe spray a little wd40 goodness about.

Same thing happened with my last tubby, but in my case the alternator was defo kaput.
