Hi guys,
Know that threads on tyres for the mr2 are all over the place and I have looked at these and the tyre calculator app. However I am still struggling to find out if a 45 profile tyre will work or not on an mr2.
I ahve just got a set of Super Advans SA3R 17x8 and 17x9
Looking to put 225/45/17 front and 255/45/17 rear will these work?

It will work if you attack parts of the strut and inner wing, mine ran with that front setup.

TFS thanks for the quick reply, I am running on coilovers so height in regard to those shouldnt be an issue. Also wont be going too low on the car either.

Well, it's not all that close to the standard tyre setup if you look at the rolling radius.
I run 215/40/17 front and 245/35/17 rear, and they are pretty much exact matches to the rolling radius the car was designed for. They also fit my 7J/8J staggered rims perfectly (not bulge, no stretch). That means they'll be stretched on your wider wheels. The point I'm making is not so much "copy me" as just stating the sidewall profile isn't ideal. That said, with those width wheels it's pretty difficult to get close to radius the car is designed for.

Ya I know its gonna play a little funny with the speedo but that I dont mind so much and also the acceleration might be a smidge slower! The added sidewall is nice though from feedback perspective for when the rears want to let go.

Sorry if I'm explaining how to suck eggs the 45 aspect ratio is a percentage of the tyre width. eg. 45% of 225mm = 101.25mm tyre wall height, 45% of 255mm = 114.75mm tyre wall height. If you want similar tyre wall height and rolling radius front and rear 225/45/17 front and 255/40/17 rear would be a better choice (40% of 255mm = 102mm tyre side wall height).
As to how/if they will fit, you'll also need to know the offset of the wheels.

im about to fit some 17" to my car
205/40/17 fronts , 235/40/17 rears.. im hoping they fit flush and no work will be needed.. the car is standard at the moment

If I were you personally I'd be looking into 205 45 17 as opposed to the 205 40's in order to try and keep the rolling radius closer to each other with the 235's
If not then the rear tyres will have a bigger radius so it won't look right IMO

If I were you personally I'd be looking into 205 45 17 as opposed to the 205 40's in order to try and keep the rolling radius closer to each other with the 235's
If not then the rear tyres will have a bigger radius so it won't look right IMO
That's a really common setup that Libertine is suggesting. Personally, I wouldn't make the fronts more wrong just to get them to match up with the suboptimal rears.
Instead, if you have 8J rear wheels I'd fit 245/35/17s back there to get an almost perfect match for the stock 225/50/15s and then go 215/40/17 at the front to keep the stagger to 30mm.

That's fair enough then. I had 215 45 17 fronts and 235 45 17 rears on the car when I got it, the rears were soon removed, I went over to 245 40 17's and had no issue with rubbing etc. I maybe wrong but if you do stick with the smaller profile on the front the rear of the car would then be sitting higher than the fronts due to the height difference in the profiles unless I've read into it wrong?
I'm going on the theory that Toyota used a 195 55 15 front and 225 50 15 rear which the difference between them was minimal, Surely they did that for a reason?

Don't forget profile is a percentage. The stock tyres are 195/55/15 and 225/50/15 but have very similar sidewall heights. (In fact, the stock front tyres have a 10mm smaller diamter than the stock rears)
Also, sitting a little high at the back is not the end of the world (and let's face it, we're talking 17mm diameter and thus only 8.5mm ride height). My understanding is that some rake is actually beneficial to stability. Certainly when I was having my car corner weighted, the engineer was very deliberately raising the rear corner to equalise the cross weights rather than dropping the other rear corner or raising the diagonal front corner.

Tyres for 8" front on standard Bilsteins max out with 215x40x17" whereas 215x45x17" would rub the underneath of the spring pan.
215x45x17" or 225x40x17" might fit if coil overs are fitted?
35mm offset gives approx 4/5mm clearance to the side of the strut tube on stock Bilsteins using 8" width wheel.
Rear 9" wide wheel with 35mm or better still 38mm offsets perfect size is 245x35x17" for ideal rolling radius although could look lost in the wheel arch whereas 245x40x17" (may rub arch lip) fills the arch better for looks...(more tyre selection & prices here) some say! another view is 255x35 or 40x17" works also (will rub arch lip).

Yes all that makes perfect sense. I have coilovers so have decided t go 225/45 front and 245/45 rear. I know the rolling radius is different to the stock setup but the extra sidewall i wanted so will see how i get on. Will report back

Report back yes please! a note on arch rolling a part roll will not stress the paint unduly and should be ok, whereas a lip rolled back fully with sealant (fully waterproof) sounds a great idea but my local body shop assure me that to roll the lip back to that degree (90*) will result in the paint stretching and cracking which is not ideal.
